Kenting National Forest Recreation Area Introduction
Kenting National Forest Recreation Area was originally a marine garden inhabited by many stone corals, calcareous algae, foraminifera, and shellfish. Due to the tectonic movements of the Earth 500,000 years ago, it transformed into a unique forest ecosystem—high coral reef forest—combining rich ecology, monsoon rainforests, and limestone terrain, providing visitors with different recreational options in Kenting. It is only a 10-minute drive from Kenting Street and is Taiwan's second national forest recreation area, boasting developed high coral reef forests and monsoon rainforests, featuring large breadfruit trees tightly embedded in reef rocks, well-rooted silverleaf trees, and countless aerial roots of banyan trees. In 1906, the Japanese established the "Kengchuan Tropical Botanical Garden" here, which has a history of over a century. In the park, groups of Formosan macaques and red-bellied squirrels are commonly seen, and lucky visitors may catch glimpses of Formosan sika deer and crab-eating macaques. The most fascinating sights are the migratory birds visiting in autumn and winter, such as the grey-faced buzzard in October and even the rare orioles. The forest floor is home to endemic species like the yellow-legged mud crab and the bankara snail. Another major feature of Kenting National Forest Recreation Area is its limestone topography. In caves like the Silver Dragon Cave and Stone Column Treasure Cave, you can see geological treasures such as stalactites and stalagmites. This magical forest is sure to satisfy the eyes of adventure lovers!
