Masiqiao Charcoal Kiln Introduction

- Introduction - Walking into Matsu Mountain, it feels like stepping into a scene where time stands still. The stone-built carbon kilns stretch out like a wall, with remnants of the warmth left by the charcoal still flowing in the air. As the wind brushes past the kiln entrance, one can almost hear the echoes of miners sweating in pursuit of their dreams. - Features - Matsu Charcoal Kiln is a living embodiment of the mining history of Qidu, Keelung. These kilns, built from stones without the use of any concrete, remain steadfast despite the passage of time. During the 1950s, this place used to be filled with smoke and flames day and night, serving as an important facility for the conversion of coal into coke, supporting the booming steel industry. Today, the weathered kilns alongside preserved cooling and ecological pools create a space where mining and nature coexist; coupled with the transformed pizza oven design, this site not only tells stories of the past but also serves as a venue for experience and education. - Recommended Activities - The best time to visit Matsu Charcoal Kiln is in the evening for a stroll, when the sunlight casts a glow on the stone kilns, seemingly illuminating the memories of the mining industry. If one visits during the tung flower season, the snow-white petals swirling around create a striking contrast against the charred kilns, making it breathtakingly beautiful.
