Yongkang Sankang Sugar Factory Shrine Ruins Introduction
During the Japanese colonial period, a shrine was established at the Sankandian Sugar Factory to worship Prince Nogu, Amaterasu Omikami, and Toyouke no Kami. The shrine served as a center of faith for the Japanese, and while there were several shrines in the Tainan area at the time, most near the city center have either been destroyed or renovated. Shrines were typically located in quiet, wooded areas, and the Sankandian Shrine is a prime example as it is somewhat secluded from the city and situated within the sugar factory. Over time, the wooden structures of the shrine have disappeared, but the foundations of the main hall, torii gate, temizuya, stone lanterns, approach path, and shrine office can still be seen. Stepping inside feels like entering the remains of a secluded forest shrine, surrounded by lush greenery that also protects a rich ecosystem. After rain, the pooled water on the ground reflects the entire site, creating a dreamlike scene reminiscent of a movie set. Nature photography enthusiasts often visit to seek the rare Juro frog that resides in this hidden paradise.
