Beigang Cattle Market Introduction

Due to the rise of mechanized farming in Taiwan, the agricultural machinery like tillers and transportation vehicles such as iron bull carts have gradually replaced traditional cattle. The social value of cattle has significantly diminished, leading to a relative decline in the importance of cattle markets and cattle dealers. BeigANG Cattle Market is one of the last two cattle markets remaining in Taiwan, located along the banks of the BeigANG River, west of the BeigANG Bridge. It operates early in the morning on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days of each lunar month and closes at noon. In the past, the market had peak transaction volumes reaching thousands of heads of cattle. Nowadays, even though there are few cattle traded, it remains a popular bustling marketplace for old farmers and tourists in the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Plain, selling daily necessities, snacks, arts and crafts, and second-hand electrical tools.
