Beigang Cattle Market Introduction
Due to the current mechanization of agriculture in Taiwan, with farming machinery and cargo transport vehicles gradually replacing the traditional draft animals, the social value of cattle has significantly diminished. Consequently, the importance of cattle markets and cattle traders has also declined. The Beigang cattle market is one of the last two remaining cattle markets in Taiwan, located by the banks of the Beigang River, on the west side of the Beigang Bridge. It opens early in the morning on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th of each lunar month and closes at noon. In the past, the highest transaction volume had reached thousands of cattle; today, although there are few cattle being bought and sold, it remains a favorite bustling market for elderly farmers and tourists in the Yunlin-Chiayi area, offering daily necessities, snacks, artistic items, and second-hand electrical tools.
