Due to the current mechanization of agriculture in Taiwan, the bullock cart has gradually replaced the working bull. The social value of cattle has significantly decreased, and the importance of cattle markets and traders has correspondingly diminished. The Beigang Cattle Market is one of the last two cattle markets in Taiwan, located by the Beigang River, west of the Beigang Bridge. It is open for business on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days of the month in the Gregorian calendar, starting early in the morning and closing at noon. In the past, the highest trading volume reached up to a thousand heads, and although there are now few cattle transactions, it remains a popular market for elderly farmers and tourists in the Yunlin and Chiayi plains, selling daily necessities, snacks, arts and crafts, and second-hand electrical tools.

Beigang Cattle Market Introduction

Due to the current mechanization of agriculture in Taiwan, with the introduction of machinery such as tractors and cargo trucks gradually replacing traditional oxen, the social value of oxen has significantly diminished. Consequently, the importance of cattle markets and cattle traders has also declined. The Beigang Cattle Market is one of the last two remaining cattle markets in Taiwan, located by the Beigang River, west of the Beigang Bridge. The market opens early on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th of each lunar month and closes at noon. In the past, the highest trading volume reached up to a thousand head of cattle, but although there are now few cattle sold, it remains a favorite bustling market for local farmers and tourists alike, offering daily necessities, snacks, cultural items, and second-hand electrical tools.
