A-Hsing Squid Soup Introduction
Squid soup is quite common in Taiwan, but "squid mouth soup" seems to be less prevalent. This distinctive snack also originated from Douliu and is said to be around 50 years old. During a time when economic conditions were not very abundant, being able to eat squid mouths was considered quite a luxury. The locals of Douliu prepared the squid mouths into a soup, allowing diners to enjoy several squid mouths in one bowl, making it a high-priced delicacy at that time. "A-Hsing Zui Chi Zui Squid Mouth Soup" on Zhongzheng Road in Douliu is the original store for "squid mouth soup," having been in operation for about 50 years. Locals know they are the founding store, and the broth is a clear and rich yellow with small, dark squid mouths that look quite unique. Eating squid mouths involves nibbling off the black head, which adds to the fun of the experience. Some regular customers have been enjoying it for over 40 years, and they often order two bowls filled with squid mouths that cover the entire table. It is said that the highest record at the store was someone who consumed 17 bowls of squid mouth soup in one sitting, proving the irresistible allure of this delicacy.
