Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area Introduction
The Tzengzhi National Forest Recreation Area, known as "Sentao," is the best place in southern Taiwan to enjoy forest bathing, summer cooling, and ecological appreciation. Located about a 2-hour drive from Kaohsiung City, Pingtung City, and Tainan City, Tzengzhi was once the living area of the Bunun people. During the Japanese colonial period, Kyoto University established an experimental forest here, resulting in the presence of the rare Japanese Cypress and extensive plantings of Alnus formosana in Taiwan. The famous Liugui Military Line passes through this area, leaving behind many historical relics. The park's elevation ranges from 1,500 to 1,804 meters, providing a cool and pleasant climate. In the "Cloud Forest" zone, large trees such as Cinnamomum kanehirae, Machilus thunbergii, and Castanopsis hystrix thrive, along with the namesake "Tzengzhi Begonia" and numerous rare ferns, making it quite precious; it also nurtures rich ecology and is home to many rare insects, such as the Louis's Horned Beetle, the Great Green Moth, and the Taiwan Cicada. Additionally, it is one of the best places in Taiwan to easily spot the Yellow Tit, making it a special spot perfect for hiking and birdwatching!
