Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area Introduction
In the Shuangliu National Forest Recreational Area, you can admire the banyan trees that form a forest, stroll through beautiful plantations, climb Hat Mountain for a panoramic view, or trace the Fenggang Creek upstream to reach the Shuangliu Waterfall, which has been voted as Taiwan's second most beautiful waterfall. The area is rich in negative ions and fresh air, allowing visitors to experience a different charm of the Hengchun Peninsula. This location is in Lion's Head Township, Pingtung County, and is less than a half-hour drive from Fenggang. The name "Shuangliu" comes from the confluence of the upper tributaries of Fenggang Creek, the Darin Creek, and the Neiwun Creek. Historically, it was a living area for the Paiwan people, and remnants of their unique architecture, the "Turtle Shell House," can still be found along the Banyan Trail. In 1965, the Forestry Bureau planted a large area with tropical forestry species such as wax trees and acacia, making it an excellent spot to appreciate the beauty of broadleaf plantations. Among the unique ecology, you can see representative plants of the Hengchun Peninsula along the Hat Mountain Trail, such as the Hengchun loquat and the coastal wood mangrove, as well as Ogasawara clubmoss. You might also encounter birds like the Formosan Blue Magpie and Formosan Pheasant, along with over 196 species of butterflies, including the conservation-listed Golden Butterfly!
