Meilun Mountain Trail Introduction
In 1949, Mr. Luo Xianglin, the director of the Hualien County Chronicle Compilation Committee, wrote about the "Eight Scenic Views of Hualien," which are: "Taroko Convergence, Eight Spirals of Greenery, Homecoming at the Port, Clear Pool Leaping Carps, High-Flying Waterfall, Red Leaves Searching Paths, Xiugu Searching for Jade, and Antung Bathing in Warmth." The "Eight Spirals" refers to Meilun Mountain. Meilun Mountain is a landmark in Hualien City, standing out prominently in the plains of Hualien City, with an elevation of 108 meters and an area of over 50 hectares. To the east lies the vast blue Pacific Ocean, while the Meilun River meanders to the west, making it a backyard for the people of Hualien and a great place for public morning and evening exercise and sightseeing. Meilun is rich in ecology, suitable for walking and parent-child activities. Entering Meilun Mountain Park from Shangzhi Road, visitors will notice wooden stakes blocking vehicle access at the entrance. As you walk up, on the right side is the Ecological Exhibition Hall of Meilun Mountain Park, the first exhibition hall in eastern Taiwan focusing on firefly restoration efforts, covering an area of about 330 square meters. Before entering the Meilun Mountain Trail, you can visit the Ecological Exhibition Hall to learn about nature's delicate creatures. The Meilun Mountain Trail features gentle paths, often frequented by groups of people walking and chatting. There is also a large bright green playground lawn with slides, making it a great place for children to play. In the warm winter afternoons, the sounds of children’s laughter fill the air, adding a lovely sentiment to Meilun Mountain Park. Enjoying Hualien’s Scenic Views and Rich History Above the parent-child playground is a hexagonal pavilion where visitors can rest and enjoy the view. From the pavilion, one can see Hualien’s charming landscape, with lush green mountains accentuated by the nearby stream—a perfect blend of mountains and water that has long been favored by tourists. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a fighter jet flying low, along with the thunderous roar of its engine, which is another distinctive feature of Hualien. In addition to daily recreational activities for the public, Meilun Mountain Park also preserves ancient historical sites. Meilun Mountain was formerly known as Turtle Mountain, Bali Mountain, Eight Spiral Mountain, and Milun Mountain. It was renamed Meilun Mountain in 1951 and has retained that name ever since. Due to its geographic location and height, Meilun Mountain became a military site for Hualien. Since the Qing Dynasty, it has hosted agricultural and military personnel. During World War II, the Japanese military constructed bunkers and tunnels at the foot of Meilun Mountain, and the Nationalist Army was also stationed there, with the only Presidential Guard Cemetery in Taiwan located here. The Meilun Mountain Trail is suitable for all age groups, allowing visitors to enjoy family time as well as visit for exercise and absorb nature’s phytoncides, providing a refreshing escape from the busy life while experiencing the beauty of Hualien.
