Wenshui Old Street Introduction
Wenshui is located at the upper reaches of the Houlong River, where Wenshui Creek meets its tributary Dahu Creek. The geological strata through which Wenshui Creek flows consist partly of soft shale layers, resulting in muddy water for extended periods during floods, leading residents to name it Wenshui (in Hakka: "Wen" refers to muddy water). In earlier times, agricultural products from the southern area of Shitan, the northern five villages of Taian, and the Dahu region were transported to Wenshui Old Street and then distributed to Miaoli City via the area's carts. This area served as a major transportation hub and distribution center for goods. In the 1950s and 1960s, due to material shortages, straw was used to make an excellent insulation device known as "Cha Shou." "Cha Shou" has become a significant characteristic left by our ancestors in this area. Today, after efforts to secure funding for reconstruction by the current township chief, Wenshui Old Street has transformed, showcasing a different ambiance that reflects the genuine and practical spirit of the Hakka people. It is also expected to stimulate the development of local cultural industries in Shitan. You are welcome to come here, take a stroll, enjoy some tea, and taste Hakka cuisine, experiencing a unique facet of Hakka culture. In recent years, this place has become the gateway for tourists entering "Shei-Pa National Park" and "Tai'an Hot Spring Scenic Area," with the formerly old and chaotic settlement now presenting a new look. The early charming wooden buildings have been planned as a whole, adorned with new signs, and matched with newly renovated brick pathways, creating an orderly yet nostalgically faint atmosphere that transports visitors into a time tunnel, where they can reflect on the bustling past of goods distribution and lively crowds. Although today does not boast the same prosperity as before, the tranquil scenery still offers a unique charm! Besides "Cha Shou," the proximity to Dahu has made strawberries a common sight here. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausage, and strawberry ice cream have become integral parts of this area. In addition to the existing shops, on weekends, local residents set up stalls outside their homes, displaying Hakka rice noodles, vegetable buns, and pickled vegetable soup to attract passing tourists. The delicious food satisfies the stomach, while the richness of Hakka hospitality enriches the souls of travelers. Take a trip to Wenshui Old Street during the holidays and personally experience its unique charm!
