Wenshui Old Street Introduction
Wenshui is located on the upstream section of the Holo River, where the Wenshui River and its tributary, the Dahu River, converge. Certain sections of the Wenshui River flow through soft shale strata, which often become muddied for a long time following floods, leading residents to refer to it as Wenshui (in Hakka, "Wen" means murky water). In the past, agricultural products from the southern district of Shitan, the northern villages of Taian, and the Dahu area were transported to Wenshui Old Street and then carried to Miaoli City by local carts. This area served as a major hub for goods and an early distribution center. From the 1960s to 1970s, due to a scarcity of resources, straw was used to create a well-insulated item known as "Chashou." This has become a significant characteristic left by our ancestors in this area. Today, Wenshui Old Street has been rebuilt with strong support from the current township mayor, presenting a different style that reflects the simplicity and practicality of the Hakka people. This revitalization is expected to boost the development of local cultural industries in Shitan. Visitors are welcome to stroll around, enjoy some tea, and taste Hakka cuisine to experience a different aspect of Hakka culture. In recent years, Wenshui has become a gateway for tourists entering "Xue Shan National Park" and the "Taian Hot Springs Scenic Area." The formerly old and chaotic settlement now displays a new facade. The traditional wooden buildings have been planned as a whole, adorned with new signs, and paired with newly renovated brick pathways, creating a tidy yet nostalgic atmosphere that transports visitors back to the bustling era of goods distribution and lively crowds. Though it may not return to its former glory, the serene scenery today offers a unique charm! In addition to "Chashou," the geographical advantage near Dahu allows strawberries to thrive everywhere. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausages, and strawberry ice cream have become integral parts of this area. Besides the existing shops, local residents set up stalls in front of their houses during weekends, displaying Hakka rice noodles, vegetable buns, pickled vegetable soup, and other Hakka snacks, inviting passing tourists to stop by and enjoy. Satisfying your taste buds with delicious food also enriches the spirit of every traveler with Hakka hospitality. Take a trip to Wenshui Old Street on your holiday and personally experience its unique charm!
