Wenshui Old Street Introduction

Wenshui is located at the upper reaches of the Holo River, where the Wenshui Creek and its tributary Dahu Creek converge. The bedrock of the Wenshui Creek consists of soft shale layers, which cause the water to remain murky for an extended period after floods, leading residents to refer to it as Wenshui (in Hakka: "Wen" means muddy water). In the early days, goods from the southern area of Shitan, the northern five villages of Taian, and the mountainous Dahu area were transported to Wenshui Old Street and then distributed to Miaoli City by cart. This area served as a major hub for goods and an early distribution center. During the 1960s, due to material shortages, straw was used to create a highly effective insulation device known as "Cha Shou." "Cha Shou" has since become a significant local characteristic left by previous generations. Today, following the efforts of the current township head to secure funding for reconstruction, Wenshui Old Street has transformed into a new appearance, reflecting the simplicity and practicality of Hakka culture. It is poised to promote the development of local cultural industries in Shitan. Visitors are welcome to stroll, sip tea, and enjoy Hakka cuisine, experiencing a different aspect of Hakka culture. In recent years, this area has become the gateway for tourists entering Shei-Pa National Park and the Taian Hot Spring Scenic Area. The once old and chaotic settlement has showcased a new look. The early traditional wooden buildings have been systematically planned, adorned with new signs, and complemented by renovated brick pathways, creating a tidy but still nostalgic atmosphere. It feels like stepping into a time tunnel, imagining the bustling days of cargo distribution and lively crowds. While it may not regain its former glory, the serene scenery today offers a distinctive charm! In addition to "Cha Shou," the proximity to Dahu ensures an abundance of strawberries in the area. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausages, and strawberry ice cream have all become integral parts of the local offerings. Besides existing shops, during weekends, local residents set up stalls in front of their homes, showcasing Hakka snacks such as Hakka noodles, vegetable buns, and pickled vegetable soup, inviting passing tourists to stop and indulge. The delicious food satisfies the appetite, while the warmth of Hakka hospitality enriches the souls of every traveler. Take advantage of the holiday to visit Wenshui Old Street and personally experience its unique charm!
