Wenshui Old Street Introduction
Wenshui is located in the upper reaches of the Holo River, at the confluence of the Wenshui River and its tributary, the Dahuk River. The geological layers through which the Wenshui River flows consist partly of soft shale, making the water murky during floods, which is why residents refer to it as Wenshui. (In Hakka: the murky water is referred to as "Wen".) In the past, agricultural products from the southern area of Shitan, the five villages in the northern part of Taian, and the Dahu area were transported to Wenshui Old Street and then delivered via local carts to the Miaoli market. This area served as a major goods hub and an early distribution center. In the 1950s and 1960s, when materials were scarce, straw was used to create an effective insulator known as "Cha Shou." This unique characteristic has been left by our ancestors in this area. Today, after the current village chief successfully secured funding for reconstruction, Wenshui Old Street has presented a different appearance, reflecting the simplicity and practicality of Hakka culture. It is also expected to promote the development of local cultural industries in Shitan. You are welcome to visit, have a cup of tea, taste Hakka cuisine, and experience a different Hakka charm. In recent years, this has become a gateway for tourists entering "Snow Mountain National Park" and "Taian Hot Springs Scenic Area." The once old and messy settlements have now revealed a new look. The traditional wooden buildings have been planned as a whole, with new signs hanging and newly repaired brick pathways adding to the neatness while still retaining a hint of nostalgia, making one feel as though they have entered a time tunnel, reminiscing about the hustle and bustle of the past when goods were distributed and the streets were lively. Though today’s vibrancy is not what it once was, the tranquil scenery still has its own unique charm! In addition to "Cha Shou," the advantageous location near Dahu means that strawberries are everywhere around here. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausage, and strawberry ice cream have all become part of the local scene. Besides the existing shops, every weekend, local residents set up stalls at their doorsteps, displaying Hakka flat noodles, vegetable buns, and pickled vegetable soup—inviting passing tourists to stop and enjoy. The delicious food fills the stomach, while the warmth of Hakka hospitality enriches the soul of every traveler. Take a trip to Wenshui Old Street on a holiday and personally experience its unique charm!
