Wenshui Old Street Introduction

Wenshui is located in the upper reaches of the Hulong River, at the confluence of the Wenshui River and its tributary, the Dahu River. The strata through which the Wenshui River flows include sections of soft shale, which causes the water to remain murky after floods, leading residents to name it Wenshui (in Hakka: “Wen” means muddy water). In the early days, agricultural products from the southern area of Shitan, the five villages in northern Taian, and the Dahu area were transported to Wenshui Old Street and then distributed to Miaoli City through the local tram system. This area was a major hub for goods and an early distribution center. In the 1960s, during a period of resource scarcity, straw was used to create an effective insulation device known as “Chashou.” “Chashou” has become a unique feature left behind by the ancestors of this place. Today, Wenshui Old Street, after receiving substantial funding for reconstruction led by the current village head, showcases a different ambiance, reflecting the down-to-earth and practical spirit of the Hakka people, and is expected to drive the development of local cultural industries in Shitan. Visitors are welcome to stroll around, enjoy some tea, taste Hakka cuisine, and experience a different side of Hakka culture. In recent years, it has become an entrance for tourists heading into Shei-Pa National Park and the Taian Hot Spring Scenic Area. The once old and chaotic settlement has transformed into a new visage. The quaint wooden structures have been well-planned, adorned with new signboards, and complemented by newly paved brick pathways, appearing tidy while still exuding a hint of nostalgia, reminiscent of the bustling past with goods distribution and crowded streets. Although it is no longer as prosperous as it once was, the serene scenery today still offers a unique charm! In addition to “Chashou,” the advantageous location near Dahu makes strawberries a prominent feature here. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausages, and strawberry ice cream have become local specialties. Besides existing shops, local residents set up stalls in front of their homes on weekends, offering Hakka-style rice noodles, vegetable buns, preserved vegetable soup, and other Hakka snacks, welcoming passing tourists to stop by and enjoy. The delicious food satiates the appetite, while the rich Hakka hospitality nourishes the soul of every traveler. Take the opportunity to visit Wenshui Old Street on a holiday to personally experience its unique charm!
