Hua Yu, Hua Yu Lighthouse Introduction
Hua Yu is located to the south-southwest of Wang'an Island and is the westernmost island of Penghu County, as well as the westernmost point of Taiwan, with a height of about 53 meters. The terrain of Hua Yu is similar to that of other islands in Penghu, but its geology is different; while other islands are primarily composed of basalt, the rocks that make up Hua Yu are mainly andesite, formed between 90 million and 50 million years ago, making it the oldest island in the Penghu archipelago. Under long-term weathering, it has carved out different rock landscapes. During low tide, the southeastern coastal erosion rocks of Hua Yu reveal what is said to be the left footprint of the legendary "Immortal Footprint Stone," echoing the right footprint at Tiantai Mountain on Wang'an Island. The island also features rock formations such as the Couple's Stone (Lover's Stone), Stone Guanyin, Stone Monkey, Old Man Stone, and others. At the top of Hua Yu stands the Hua Yu Lighthouse, a major landmark near Hua Yu, built during the Japanese era due to its military significance. It was completed in the 14th year of the Showa era (1939) and is constructed of white circular reinforced concrete, standing 12.5 meters tall, making it the westernmost lighthouse in Taiwan. It currently houses a fourth-order flashing light, flashing white every 5 seconds, with a light intensity of 1600 candlepower, and is managed remotely (unmanned).
