Hua Yu, Hua Yu Lighthouse Introduction
Hua Yu is located in the southwestern part of Wang-an Island and is the westernmost island of Penghu County, as well as the farthest west in Taiwan, with a highest point of about 53 meters. The terrain of Hua Yu is similar to that of other Penghu islands, but its geology is different. Other islands are mainly composed of basalt, while the rocks that make up Hua Yu are primarily andesite, formed between 90 million to 50 million years ago, making it the oldest island in the Penghu archipelago. Over long periods of weathering, it has carved out unique rock formations. During low tide, on the southeastern side of Hua Yu, one can see the left foot of the legendary "Immortal Footprint" on the sea-eroded rocks, which corresponds to the right foot of Tiantai Mountain on Wang-an Island. The island also features rock formations such as the Coupling Stones (Lover's Stone), Guanyin Rock, Monkey Rock, and Old Man Rock, among others. At the top of Hua Yu stands the Hua Yu Lighthouse, which is the main landmark near Hua Yu. It was built during the Japanese occupation due to its military significance and was completed in Showa 14 (1939). The tower is a white circular structure made of reinforced concrete, standing 12.5 meters tall, and is the westernmost lighthouse in Taiwan. It is currently equipped with a fourth-order flashing light that flashes white every 5 seconds, with a luminous power of 1,600 candlepower, and is managed remotely (unmanned).
