Yuanshan Hiking Trail Introduction
Yuan Mountain is located adjacent to the west side of Sanxia Old Street, and its name is derived from its resemblance to a soaring raptor. Yuan Mountain stands in the south of the Dahan River's alluvial plain, with Yingge Rock on the northern bank of the river in the distance. When traveling on National Highway No. 3, the two mountains appear on either side like gate pillars to New Taipei. According to local legends, the army of Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) encountered attacks from two monstrous birds here, and Koxinga ordered his troops to use dragon cannons against them. After the two birds were shot down, they transformed into present-day Yingge Rock and Yuan Mountain. On Yuan Mountain, there's a Liberty Bell built in 1985, standing tall and dedicated to commemorating the 40th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration. This bell, initiated by the then mayor of Sanxia, Zhang Xiufeng, with the collaboration of local citizens, was the largest bronze bell in the country at that time and symbolizes humanity's noble ideal of pursuing peace. The Yuan Mountain Trail is of moderate difficulty, suitable for all ages, featuring various small but beautiful attractions along the way, such as the Changchun Garden Firefly Path and the colorful wall of Yuan Mountain. The path is lined with tung trees, making it a great destination for hiking and exploring. At an elevation of 291 meters, Yuan Mountain offers gazebos and benches among lush vegetation, serving as a recreational garden for Sanxia residents. On weekends, it attracts many visitors. Arriving at Yuan Mountain at dusk provides a breathtaking view of the Dahan River alluvial plain, where one can admire the twinkling lights of thousands of homes in the Sanxia, Yingge, and Bade areas. At night, the lights along National Highway No. 3 sparkle like stars on the ground, creating a stunning scenery, and on clear nights, the skyline of Taipei City can be seen from dozens of kilometers away, becoming more beautiful as night falls.
