Sanxia Dyeing Workshop and Sanxia Indigo Dyeing Center Introduction
Minguo Street, formerly known as Sanjiao Yong Street, was a hub for the dyeing industry in Sanxia during the Qing Dynasty, where local dyehouses thrived. Today, Minguo Street retains many of the architectural features from that time, with the word "dyehouse" engraved on their exteriors, creating an interesting and historically rich landscape. With the decline of indigo dyeing following the popularity of suits and kimonos during the Japanese colonial period, this craft has nearly vanished for several decades. The Sanxia Cultural Promotion Association has established the Sanxia Dye Workshop to preserve blue dye culture. Indigo dyeing is one of Taiwan’s traditional dyeing techniques, utilizing the indigo plant, which was once a major economic crop in Taiwan, as a dye. Through a complex dyeing process, blue and white patterned fabrics are created. The Sanxia Dye Workshop primarily offers services that include indigo dyeing classes, DIY indigo dyeing experiences, and indigo dyeing products, along with an online store for product ordering and experience activity reservations. The workshop provides different DIY indigo dyeing experience packages tailored for various audiences, typically lasting 1 to 2 hours, which include an introduction to Sanxia indigo dyeing, guidance on dyeing techniques, and handkerchief dyeing. Although the indigo dyeing industry is facing decline, local residents are actively preserving this traditional culture. The Sanxia Dye Workshop (Indigo Dyeing Exhibition Center) was established to safeguard indigo dye culture. Here, visitors can not only learn about indigo dyeing culture but also hands-on experience with DIY indigo dyeing to create their own unique indigo products!
