Sanxia Dyeing Workshop and Sanxia Indigo Dyeing Center Introduction
Sanxia Minquan Street, formerly known as Triangle Stream Street, was a hub for the dyeing industry in the Qing Dynasty. The local dye shops once thrived, and many buildings still retain their original structures, with inscriptions of "dye shop" on their exteriors, creating an interesting and historically rich landscape. Since indigo dyeing began to decline during the Japanese colonial period with the popularity of suits and kimonos, it has been nearly extinct for decades. To prevent the indigo culture from disappearing, the Sanxia Indigo Cultural Association helped establish the Sanxia Dye Workshop, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting indigo dyeing culture. Indigo dyeing is one of Taiwan's traditional dyeing techniques, using indigo grass, once one of Taiwan's main economic crops, as a dye. Through a complex dyeing process, it produces fabrics with blue and white patterns. The Sanxia Dye Workshop offers services including indigo dyeing classes, DIY indigo dyeing experiences, and indigo products, and also has an online store for product ordering and activity reservations. The workshop offers various DIY indigo dyeing experience packages tailored to different audiences, with typical experience times ranging from 1 to 2 hours, including an introduction to Sanxia indigo dyeing, instructions on dyeing techniques, and handkerchief dyeing. Although the dyeing industry in Sanxia faces decline, the locals are actively working to preserve this traditional culture. The Sanxia Dye Workshop (Indigo Display Center) was established to save the indigo dyeing culture, and here, in addition to learning about indigo dyeing, the most important aspect is the opportunity to personally experience DIY indigo dyeing and create your own unique indigo product!
