Sanxia Dyeing Workshop and Sanxia Indigo Dyeing Center Introduction
Sanxia Minquan Street, formerly known as Sanjiao Yong Street, was a hub for the dyeing industry during the Qing Dynasty in Sanxia. The local dye houses were quite prosperous at that time, and many of the old buildings on Sanxia Minquan Street still bear inscriptions of "dying house," creating an interesting and historically rich landscape. Due to the decline of indigo dyeing after the popularity of suits and kimonos during the Japanese colonial period, the craft has almost died out over the past few decades. To prevent the indigo dyeing culture from disappearing, the Sanxia Indigo Culture Association established the Sanxia Dye Workshop, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the indigo dyeing culture. Indigo dyeing is one of Taiwan's traditional dyeing techniques, using the indigo plant, once a major cash crop in Taiwan, as the dye. Through intricate dyeing processes, it produces fabric with blue and white patterns. The Sanxia Dye Workshop offers services including indigo dyeing classes, DIY indigo dyeing experiences, and indigo dye products, along with an online store for ordering products and reserving experience activities. The workshop provides different DIY indigo dyeing experience packages targeted at various audiences, with typical experiences lasting 1 to 2 hours, which include an introduction to Sanxia indigo dyeing, instructional dyeing techniques, and scarf dyeing. Although the dyeing industry in Sanxia faces decline, the local community actively works to preserve this traditional culture. The Sanxia Dye Workshop (Indigo Dyeing Exhibition Center) was established to safeguard the indigo dyeing culture, where visitors can not only learn about indigo dyeing but also have the opportunity to personally experience DIY indigo dyeing and create their own unique indigo products!
