Sanxia Dye Workshop and Sanxia Indigo Dyeing Center Introduction
Minquan Street in Sanxia, formerly known as Triangle Spring Street, was a hub for the dyeing industry during the Qing Dynasty. The local dye houses were quite prosperous at that time. Today, Sanxia Minquan Street retains many buildings from that era, with "dye house" inscribed on their façades, creating an interesting landscape infused with historical flavor. The indigo dyeing tradition began to decline during the Japanese occupation period, as Western suits and kimonos became popular, leading to a halt in the practice for several decades. To prevent the indigo dye culture from disappearing, the Triangle Spring Cultural Association supported the establishment of the Sanxia Dye Workshop, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting indigo dye culture. Indigo dyeing is one of Taiwan's traditional dyeing techniques, utilizing indigo grass, which was once one of Taiwan's main economic crops, as a dye. Through complex dyeing processes, blue and white patterned fabrics are created. The Sanxia Dye Workshop primarily offers services including indigo dyeing classes, DIY indigo dyeing experiences, and indigo dye products. There is also an online store providing options for product orders and reservations for experience activities. The Sanxia Dye Workshop has different DIY indigo dyeing experience packages tailored to different audiences, with typical experience times ranging from 1 to 2 hours, which include an introduction to Sanxia indigo dyeing, instruction on dyeing techniques, and handkerchief dyeing activities. Although the local dyeing industry faces decline, the residents are still actively preserving this traditional culture. The Sanxia Dye Workshop (Indigo Dyeing Exhibition Center) was established to preserve indigo dye culture, and by visiting, you can not only learn about indigo dyeing but also hands-on experience DIY indigo dyeing, creating your own unique indigo products!
