Sanxia Dye Workshop and Sanxia Indigo Dye Center Introduction
Minguo Street, formerly known as Triangle Spring Street, was a center for the dyeing industry in Sanxia during the Qing Dynasty. The local dye houses were once thriving, and many buildings from that time still remain on Minguo Street, with the word "dye house" inscribed on their facades, creating an interesting landscape that is rich in history. Due to the decline of indigo dyeing after the popularity of Western suits and kimonos during the Japanese occupation, the craft has almost disappeared for decades. In order to prevent the indigo dyeing culture from vanishing, the Triangle Spring Cultural Association assisted in establishing the Sanxia Dye Workshop, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the indigo dyeing culture. Indigo dyeing is one of Taiwan's traditional dyeing techniques, using indigo plants, which were once one of Taiwan's main economic crops, as a dye. Through complicated dyeing processes, blue and white patterned fabrics are created. The Sanxia Dye Workshop offers services including indigo dyeing classes, DIY indigo dyeing experiences, and indigo dye products. There is also an online store for ordering products and booking experiences. The Sanxia Dye Workshop presents different DIY indigo dyeing experience packages tailored for various audiences, with general experiences lasting 1 to 2 hours, including an introduction to Sanxia indigo dyeing, instruction on dyeing techniques, and handkerchief dyeing. Although the indigo dyeing industry in Sanxia faces decline, local people are still actively preserving this traditional culture. The Sanxia Dye Workshop (Indigo Dyeing Exhibition Center) was established to preserve indigo dye culture, and here, in addition to learning about indigo dye culture, the most important aspect is the opportunity to experience hands-on DIY indigo dyeing and create your own unique indigo-dyed products!
