Qitang Old Street (Jinguashi Old Street) Introduction
Qitang Old Street, located above the Gold Museum, was the commercial trading center for early miners' lives. It was built during the Japanese colonial period as a settlement for Taiwanese people to rent land from the Japanese mining industry. Due to its location in the Jinguashi Copper Mine area, it is also referred to as "Jinguashi Ginza" or "Jinguashi Old Street." The settlement was constructed along the mountainous terrain, and some residents still live here. Unlike Jiufen Old Street, which has a strong commercial atmosphere, Qitang Old Street is less frequented by tourists and retains the original appearance of a mountain town. Both Qitang Old Street and Jiufen Old Street share a similar mountainous setting, being commercial centers that flourished due to mining. As the mining industry declined and the population migrated elsewhere, visitors can explore the unique Japanese architecture along the street or wander through the small paths of the mountain town, experiencing nostalgic charm. Currently, there are still a few shops open on both sides of the street, such as grocery stores and cafes. Although the bustling atmosphere of the past is no longer present, one can enjoy a quiet stroll along the street and appreciate its serene beauty, which differs from Jiufen.
