Tunghai University - Luce Memorial Chapel Introduction
At the lush tropical campus of Tunghai University, walking along the Agricultural Road or finding a patch of grass to sit down, one can enjoy a peaceful moment, soaking in the sunlight and blending with the surrounding trees, grass, cicadas, and birdsong, quietly experiencing the gifts of nature. Life can be this simple and leisurely. The Luce Memorial Chapel at Tunghai University serves as a symbol of faith for the Tunghai community, centrally located in the campus, connecting the teaching area to the west and the dormitory area to the east. In the early days, before the trees became dense, the chapel was visible from almost any point in the campus, making it an important spiritual landmark for the people of Tunghai and a masterpiece by the renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. To achieve natural lighting and express its structure clearly, the chapel is constructed from four curved surface panels resembling an inverted boat hull, providing a sense of stability with its smaller top and larger bottom shape. Viewing it from the front or a 45-degree angle best showcases the "curvilinear" beauty of the Luce Chapel. Every Christmas, the chapel becomes a key location for celebration activities. On the campus, the internship farm raises about 100 high-quality Dutch-bred dairy cows, allowing close observation of their daily life. It also features the Tunghai University Dairy Shop, selling various dairy products, including rich fresh milk, yogurt, and milk ice cream, which are very popular. Additionally, the campus equestrian center offers diverse internship courses for students and equestrian clubs, and it allows the general public to interact closely with horses. After enjoying the beautiful scenery of the campus and the elegant chapel, the nearby Tunghai Villa, Art Street, and Taichung Science Park business district are excellent places to visit, offering a variety of delicious snacks, creative products, and boutiques that provide ample opportunities for both dining and shopping, enriching and satisfying the entire day’s itinerary.
