Tunghai University - Luce Memorial Chapel Introduction
At Tunghai University, surrounded by lush greenery, walking along Nongfu Road or simply choosing a patch of grass to sit down and enjoy the tranquil moments, basking in the sunlight and blending with the surrounding trees, grass, cicadas, and birdsong, you can quietly feel the gifts of nature. The Luce Memorial Chapel at Tunghai University is a symbol of faith for the people of Tunghai, located in the center of the campus, bordered by the teaching area to the west and the dormitory area to the east. Before the trees grew dense in the early days, the chapel could be seen from any spot within the campus, thus becoming the most important spiritual landmark for the Tunghai community. It is a masterpiece by the famous Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei. The chapel is constructed with four pieces of three-dimensional curved panels for lighting and to clearly express the structure, resembling an inverted ship's hull. Its shape, smaller at the top and larger at the bottom, gives a sense of stability, and viewing it from the front or at a 45-degree angle best showcases the beauty of its "curvilinear" design. Every year during Christmas, the Luce Memorial Chapel is an important venue for celebrations. The practical agricultural farm within Tunghai University raises about 100 excellent Dutch-bred dairy cows, allowing visitors to observe the daily life of the cows up close. It also houses the Tunghai University Dairy Shop, selling various dairy products, including rich fresh milk, yogurt, and ice cream, which are very popular. Additionally, there is a campus equestrian center that offers diverse practical courses and equestrian clubs, enabling the general public to interact closely.
