Tunghai University - Luce Chapel Introduction
Upon arriving at the lush Tunghai University, you can stroll along Nong Road or choose any patch of grass to sit down and enjoy a moment of tranquility, basking in the sunlight and blending with the nearby trees, grass, cicadas, and birdsong. You can quietly feel the gifts of nature; life can be this simple and leisurely. The Luce Memorial Chapel is a symbol of faith for the Tunghai community, located at the center of the campus, bordered by the teaching area to the west and the dormitory area to the east. When the trees on the campus were not yet dense, the chapel was visible from nearly any location on the campus, making it a significant spiritual landmark for Tunghai people. This architectural masterpiece was created by the renowned Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei. Designed for natural light and to clearly express its structure, the chapel is composed of four curved three-dimensional panels that resemble an inverted ship's hull, creating a stable appearance with a smaller top and a broader base. The chapel's "curvilinear" beauty is best showcased when viewed from the front or a 45-degree angle. Every Christmas, the Luce Memorial Chapel becomes an important venue for celebrations. Within Tunghai University, the experimental farm raises about 100 exemplary Dutch-bred dairy cows, allowing close observation of their daily lives. There is also the Tunghai Dairy Shop selling various dairy products, including rich fresh milk, yogurt, and milk ice cream, which are very popular among visitors. Additionally, the campus equestrian center offers diverse practical courses and riding clubs, providing opportunities for the public to interact with horses. After enjoying the beautiful campus scenery and the elegant chapel, nearby Tunghai Villa, Art Street, and the Zhongke Business District are excellent spots to visit. Various delicious snacks, creative products, and boutique items await you, enriching and satisfying your entire day's travel itinerary.
