Luce Memorial Chapel Introduction
Arriving at the verdant Tunghai University, one can stroll along Nong Road or choose a patch of grass to sit down and enjoy a tranquil moment, basking in the sunlight and harmonizing with the surrounding trees, grass, cicadas, and birdsong, quietly appreciating nature's gifts. Life can indeed be this simple and leisurely. The Luce Memorial Chapel at Tunghai University symbolizes the faith of the Tunghai community, located in the heart of the campus, connecting to the teaching area to the west and the dormitory area to the east. Before the trees became dense, the chapel could be seen from any spot on campus. Therefore, it has become the most important spiritual symbol for the Tunghai people, a masterpiece by the renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. The chapel's design features four curved surfaces to maximize light and clearly express its structure, resembling an inverted ship's hull, with its shape wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, giving a sense of stability. Viewing the chapel from the front or at a forty-five-degree angle best showcases its "curvilinear" beauty. Every year during Christmas, the Luce Memorial Chapel serves as a key location for celebratory activities. Within Tunghai University, the experimental farm raises about 100 excellent Dutch-bred dairy cows, allowing close observation of the cows' daily life. The university also established the Tunghai University Dairy Shop, selling a variety of dairy products, including rich fresh milk, yogurt, and milk ice cream, which are widely loved. Additionally, there is an equestrian center on campus that provides diverse internship opportunities and riding club activities, allowing general public interaction as well. After enjoying the beautiful campus scenery and the elegant chapel, nearby Tunghai Villa, Arts Street, and the Zhongke business district are great places to explore, offering a variety of delicious snacks, creative goods, and fine products, enriching this day’s travel experience.
