Anping Port South Breakwater Introduction
Anping, located near Tainan's coast, was an island disconnected from the main island of Taiwan for about 200 years, from the Dutch period through the Zheng period to the second year of the Daoguang era in the Qing Dynasty. The body of water between Anping and the Tainan coast was called Taijiang Bay at that time, where large ships could enter and exit with a depth of about 5 to 6 meters. Anping is one of a series of sandbars, originally named Yikunsan. South of Anping, near the current Erren River mouth, there are six other sandbars, with each sandbar named from Yikunsan to Qikunsan. To the north of Anping, separated by a waterway, lies the Beishanwei sandbar, which faces it. This waterway is the main route into Taijiang Bay, which was guarded by the Dutch construction of Fort Zeelandia (Anping Fort). To the north of Beishanwei, separated by the Lugang Gate, lies the Xihang Port sandbar, which is also a critical entrance to Taijiang Bay.
