Western Market (Taipei) Introduction

The West Market, commonly known as "Dachai Market," was built in 1905 and has a history of over a century. It was once the largest vegetable market in southern Taiwan, holding countless life memories of Tainan residents. In 2003, it was designated as a municipal historic site, and after years of restoration and renovation, it not only preserves the beauty of the classic Masaru-style roof but also incorporates modern market functions. The market features cultural and creative spaces, department stores, textiles, light dining options, and prepared food stalls. A sunken plaza connects the streets and alleys, creating an atmosphere where cultural preservation coexists with tourism experiences. The weekend plaza also hosts markets and band performances, allowing people to enjoy the vibrancy of urban life while experiencing a century-old charm, making it an important highlight of the Guohua and Youai business districts.
