Zonggan Temple Introduction
Zongkan Temple was built around 1704 AD. At that time, transportation between Taiwan and mainland China relied entirely on ships, which led to the practice of worshiping the guardian deity of maritime transportation. The main deity enshrined in Zongkan Temple is Ni Sheng Gong, also known as Ni Zhong Guan. He lived by the seaside and was familiar with shipping routes, which is why Ni Sheng Gong, who oversees the ancient Taijiang shipping routes, became a unique deity in Tainan. Some even say that Ni Sheng Gong is the only deity who can operate a ship.
