Xincheng Xinfeng Temple Introduction
Established during the Daoguang era, the Xinfeng Temple, dedicated to the Three Mountain Kings, has always been the faith center for the communities of Xincheng, Baodou, and Shenjing in Baoshan Township. The temple is most lively during the celebrations of the Three Mountain Kings' birthdays, which occur on the 25th of the 2nd, 5th, and 8th lunar months. Additionally, on January 14th and 15th, the "Capon Contest" is held, where residents bring their home-raised chickens to compete for the fattest one, marking a significant local event. In the past, due to a lack of medical resources and rampant epidemics, the temple conducts deity processions and prayer activities on the 14th and 15th of the lunar new year, hoping for a safe year ahead. The "noon blessing" activity is now interpreted as "good fortune in the new year." While the noon procession rests in the village, residents spontaneously provide food for the participants. This activity fosters community cohesion and promotes the Hakka values of sharing, cherishing blessings, and dedication, making it an important event for the preservation of Hakka culture.
