Wannian Creek Introduction
Wannaian River, formerly known as "Fanapupi River" and also called "Ahou River," has its upper reaches fed by Haifeng Canal, Chonglan Old Canal, and Guilai Historic Residence Canal. It flows from the suburban Ruiguang Road and Dalian Road into Pingtung City, passing through Millennium Park, and runs parallel to Ziyou Road and Zili Road. The river is approximately 5.5 kilometers long and merges with Shashe River downstream to join Niu Chou River, eventually flowing into Kaoping River. During the Japanese colonial period, the water from Wannaian River was an important water source for the Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Company’s A-Kou Sugar Factory. The narrow gauge railway that transported materials ran along the river and connected to the factory, making it a distinctive landscape of the time. However, Wannaian River once lost its original charm but has regained vitality after renovations. The riverbanks in the middle and lower reaches feature ecological stone cages, while the area between Mingui 2nd Street Bridge and Victory Bridge has been crafted into an ecological space with stonework. The willow branches swaying in the breeze by the riverside create a picturesque scene. Surrounding the riverbank are wooden walkways and observation platforms, providing spaces for the public to stroll and rest. The four pedestrian bridges—"Bridge of Hope," "Bridge of History," "Minhe Bridge," and "Bridge of Happiness"—feature famous river scenery, historical photographs, and student artworks embedded in the railings, adding a touch of charm. Near the Wanfu Temple by the riverbank, there is a memorial for the narrow gauge railway, and a monument is placed at the original site of "Wuzou Golden Bridge" (Dongxing Bridge), across from Pingtung Hospital on Zili Road, which enhances the nostalgic atmosphere of Wannaian River. Water birds can often be seen flying around Wannaian River, with willows interspersed along the banks, while both sides are predominantly planted with Taiwan's flamboyant trees. Especially in autumn, the intersection of red, yellow, and green hues enhances the beauty of Wannaian River.
