Pingtung Academy & Chaoyang Gate Introduction

Pingtung Academy was built in the 20th year of the Qing Dynasty's Jiaqing era (1815) and is the only academy building in Pingtung. During the Japanese occupation, it was transformed into a Confucius Temple. In front of the academy stands the "Jiu Ren Gong Wall" screen wall, with the interior consisting of front and rear halls and east and west wing rooms. The rear section also includes left and right wing rooms, making it a remarkably complete architectural structure and designated as a national third-level historic site. Chaoyang Gate, also known as Ahou City Gate, was built collaboratively by officials and civilians during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, featuring four city gates in the east, west, south, and north. However, during the Japanese occupation, road construction led to the demolition of most gates, leaving only the East Gate standing in Zhongshan Park. The mottled red brick city wall, along with the surrounding old trees, adds to its ancient charm.
