Pingtung Academy & Chaoyang Gate Introduction

Pingtung Academy was built in the 20th year of the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty (1815 AD) and is the only academy building in Pingtung. During the Japanese colonial period, it was transformed into a Confucius Temple. In front of the academy stands the "Jiu Ren Palace Wall" screen wall, and the interior consists of front and rear halls, east and west wing rooms, with additional left and right wing rooms at the back, making it a well-preserved architectural complex designated as a national historic site (三級古蹟). Chaoyang Gate, also known as Ahou City Gate, was constructed during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty through the cooperative efforts of officials and civilians for the four city gates in the east, west, south, and north. However, during the Japanese colonial period, it was demolished for road construction, and now only the East Gate remains, located within Zhongshan Park. The weathered red brick city wall, along with the surrounding old trees, adds to its rustic charm.
