Pingtung Academy & Chaoyang Gate Introduction
Pingtung Academy was constructed in the 20th year of the Jia Qing era (1815 AD), and it is the only academy building in Pingtung. During the Japanese colonial period, it was converted into a Confucius Temple. A "Jiuren Palace Wall" screen wall is built in front of the academy, and the interior consists of a main hall and back hall, along with east and west side rooms, while the back section has left and right wings, making it a remarkably complete architectural structure and designated as a national heritage site of level three. Chaoyang Gate, also known as Ahou City Gate, was constructed during the Daoguang period when officials and citizens worked together to build four gates: east, west, south, and north. However, during the Japanese rule, road construction led to the demolition of most gates, and today only the East Gate remains within Zhongshan Park. The weathered red brick city wall, paired with the surrounding old trees, highlights its ancient charm.
