Ma Shan Observatory Introduction
Matsu Mountain, located in Jinsha Township, is only 2,100 meters from the nearby Jiao Yu Island, and during low tide, it is even closer at just 1,800 meters, making it the closest point between Kinmen and Matsu. In the past, it served as a military fortress for observing activities on the opposite shore and is known as the "First Post in the World." Upon entering the observation station, visitors pass through a segment of a wartime tunnel that houses military installations such as gun emplacements. On clear days, the Hongjian Mountain in Fujian is clearly visible, bringing back memories of its military past, and it has become a popular tourist attraction! The Matsu Broadcasting Station is located alongside the access road to the Matsu observation station, similar to the Guningtou Beishan Broadcasting Station, serving as the frontline for psychological operations targeting the mainland, commonly referred to by locals as the “shouting station.” The late singer Teresa Teng also broadcasted twice from the Matsu Broadcasting Station to the other side. With the passage of time, these psychological operations are no longer necessary, and the station now occasionally plays pop music and Taiwanese songs.
