Beiyue Temple Introduction

Beiyue Temple is located at the foothills of Wuhushan in the northeastern corner of Kinmen, and it is one of the historical centers of faith in the area. It is said to have been built during the Southern Song Dynasty and originally served as a village temple for the protection of the local people in the Shanxi area. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, coastal raiders disturbed the area, affecting residential homes in Shanxi, and Beiyue Temple was also burned down. Although it was repaired multiple times afterward, it was severely damaged again by strong winds during the late Qing Dynasty. In 1979, with the joint initiative and donations from local villagers and overseas compatriots, reconstruction efforts began, and it was completed in 1984, taking on the imposing appearance we see today. The temple primarily enshrines Beiyue Wang and Wang Niang, with additional worship of Xinglei Wang, and it enjoys a strong following, deeply respected by local devotees. Among the many temples in Kinmen, Beiyue Temple is one of the larger architectural complexes, characterized by its intact structure and grandeur, blending naturally with the surrounding mountains and sea views, making it an excellent location to explore Kinmen's religious culture and history.
