Beiyue Temple Introduction

Beiyue Temple is located at the foothills of Wuhu Mountain in the northeast corner of Kinmen and is one of the area's historically significant centers of belief. It is said to have been built during the Southern Song Dynasty and originally served as a village temple to protect the local population in the Shanxi area. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, pirates harassed the coastal areas, which affected the houses in Shanxi, and Beiyue Temple was also burned down. Although it underwent multiple restorations afterward, it was severely damaged again by strong winds in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1979, with the joint initiative and donations from the local villagers and overseas compatriots, reconstruction work began and was completed in 1984, taking on the solemn appearance seen today. The temple primarily enshrines Beiyue Wanggong and Wangniang, along with X刑 Wangye, and enjoys a flourishing incense worship, highly respected by local devotees. Among the many temples in Kinmen, Beiyue Temple is one of the larger architectural complexes, not only featuring a complete structure and grandeur but also integrating the natural atmosphere of mountains and the sea, making it an excellent place to explore Kinmen's religious culture and history.
