Beiyue Temple Introduction

Beiyue Temple is located at the foothills of Wuhu Mountain in the northeastern corner of Kinmen and is one of the area's historical centers of faith. It is said to have been built during the Southern Song Dynasty, originally serving as a village temple to protect the local residents of Shanxi. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, coastal raids by pirates affected the homes in Shanxi, and Beiyue Temple was also burned down. Although it was repaired multiple times afterward, it was severely damaged again due to strong winds by the end of the Qing Dynasty. In 1979, with the joint initiative and donations from the residents of Shanxi and overseas compatriots, a reconstruction project was launched, which was completed in 1984, resulting in the solemn appearance seen today. The temple primarily enshrines the Northern Mountain King and his consort, as well as the Execution King, and it is highly revered by local worshippers due to its flourishing incense offerings. Among the many temples in Kinmen, Beiyue Temple is considered a larger architectural complex that not only has a complete structure and grand atmosphere but also integrates the natural scenery of mountains and the sea, making it an excellent location to explore Kinmen's religious culture and history.
