Dong Yi Cheng Nostalgic Grocery Store Introduction
Founded in 1959 by Kang Wan-sheng and Hsu An-mian (the current owner, Grandma An-mian), "Dong Yi Cheng" started as a grocery store selling tobacco, alcohol, tea, rice, oil, salt, canned salted fish, daily necessities, candies, cookies, and more—offering a greater variety than today's convenience stores. The peak period for Dong Yi Cheng was from the mid-1960s to the 1970s, when it served as the main ticketing station for Puli on the Changhua Bus system, making it a bustling hub for locals traveling to Changhua and Lugang. While modern Taiwanese typically shop at convenience stores, supermarkets, or hypermarkets, they often miss out on the warmth of human connection. The sense of community is what keeps Grandma An-mian dedicated to maintaining the old shop; she enjoys chatting with young customers and checking in on her neighbors. After over 60 years, "Dong Yi Cheng" remains a place that offers warmth and connection!
