Daan Library Introduction
Passing by Luguang Village No. 4, this building, resembling a school auditorium, features red bricks and green window frames, with the nostalgic characters of "Zhongzheng Hall" that invite passersby to stop and take a closer look. This site used to be a cinema in the memories of the local residents. In 2011, it was transformed into the Taoyuan City Library Daan Branch, becoming a cultural space that promotes arts and culture. In 1964, the Ministry of National Defense established a cultural and health center here, providing a venue for officers, their families, and Daan residents to enjoy movies. Today, the Daan Library, which carries the living memories of the local community, still retains the characteristics of a military-industrial building from the 1950s. The original ticket booth has been repurposed as a mail drop and book return area. The façade facing Chongqing Street features a symmetrical design, complemented by a pebble wash mountain wall, creating a modern architectural aesthetic through minimalistic lines. Upon entering, the undulating floor, rows of audience seats, and movie projection holes on the walls take visitors back to the cinema era. The multimedia screening room located in the central area on the first floor continues the imagery of the former cinema, while the second floor's restoration display area stores old roof tiles from Zhongzheng Hall and film projection tubes, with wall panels introducing the restoration history. Another highlight of the library is the Fink-style steel frame rooftop, where the interwoven steel structure adds a retro industrial flair to the old building. Climbing up to the loft to overlook the space offers a significant visual tension. The high ceiling design of the two-story interior makes the space feel airy and unconstrained, with a reading area where even the windowsills are fitted with cushions, allowing visitors to indulge in the vast sea of books anytime, anywhere.
