Chao Wu - Pottery Art Introduction
Located in Hukou Old Street, "Zhan Zhi Liang · Ceramic Play" serves as both the creative studio and exhibition sales base for ceramic artist Zhan Zhi Liang. The space was formerly the Hukou Years Restaurant, and he was drawn to the tranquil daily life and the broad, simple qualities of the old street, prompting him to relocate from Taoyuan to cultivate his craft quietly. The front half of the studio is the exhibition and sales area, where a large collection of his antique collections and ceramic creations is displayed on windowsills and shelves. There is also a workbench where students can apply glaze and engrave designs; the back half is equipped with five kilns, with the largest kiln exceeding the height of an adult. The first step of the experiential course is to knead the clay, much like kneading dough, ensuring even texture, appropriate moisture, and the right softness. Next, the clay is shaped using a potter's wheel, and additional clay is added for handles and other accessories. During decoration, students can affix clay shapes or engrave patterns and文字, enhancing personal style. It’s important to note that the metallic oxides in the glaze will change color during firing; for example, iron oxide turns brown after firing, so care should be taken to achieve the desired effect. Firing is the final step, where Zhan Zhi Liang will assist in placing the colored body into the kiln for firing at 1,240 degrees Celsius, and the finished pieces will be shipped out, ready for use about two weeks later!
