Ziyun Temple Introduction
Ziyun Temple is a famous third-class historic site in the Chiayi area, located on the edge of the Alishan mountain range at Bantian Rock, about seventeen kilometers from downtown Chiayi. Among the Buddhist temples in Taiwan, it is one of the older historical sites, established in the 21st year of the Kangxi era (1682), and it has a history of more than three hundred years. Ziyun Temple faces southeast from the northwest and features a temple structure with five bays, two courtyards, and two corridors flanked by guardian dragons. There is a wide temple plaza in front, and each corridor has a two-story bell and drum tower. The pillars of the front hall in the first courtyard are inscribed with: "Ziguang peeking at the appearance, Yunying reflecting the heart of the cicada." The exterior is decorated with carvings on the three main beams, and a pair of stone carvings of kylin is located on either side of the central gate. The carvings at Ziyun Temple are extremely intricate, with impressive sculptures on dragon columns, phoenix tails, and rafters. Between the gable walls, there is the "Buddha Ancestor Incense Lamp Stele" from 1765 (established by Master Juefeng, clarifying the temple's land boundaries), the "Bantian Rock Reconstruction Stele" from 1857 (established by Guo Zhuohai), the construction record of the Celebration Hall, and eight ancient steles including the "Buddha Ancestor Stele of Bantian Rock," whose inscriptions are still legible today. In front of the temple, there are two two-hundred-year-old ancient plum trees known as "Mandarin Duck Plums"; surrounding the temple are several hectares of Paulownia and Tung trees. During the flowering season, the scene transforms into a sea of white flowers, filling the air with a fragrant aroma that uplifts the spirits.
