Shimen Recreation Area Introduction
Shimen Recreation Area is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, north of Shiti Ping, at the foothills of Da-Qi Mountain and Maokong Mountain. The name Shimen derives from a sea cave in the coastal area that resembles a door. Upon entering Shimen, the first tunnel stretches from Shimen Cave to the "Human Conquers Nature" monument along the coastline, where one can see towering mountains, gushing waters, and a scenery reminiscent of Taroko. The coastal features of Shimen, including the wave-cut platform, sea caves, and wave-cut gullies, are well-developed, serving as a replica of the Baxiandong terrain. A Shimen Nature Reserve is currently planned. To the north of Shiti Ping, at the foothills of Da-Qi Mountain and Maokong Mountain, there is Shimen Beach, which features a large cave known as Shimen Cave, a natural sea cave with black rock formations that are resistant to collapse. Over time, due to marine erosion, the cliffs here appear steep and captivating. The cave has openings on all four sides, and the angle of sunlight that enters allows the long-time residents to tell the time very accurately. Legend has it that in ancient times, a group of Amis people secretly gathered at Shimen to plan an ambush on a tribe located at the mouth of Xiuguluan River. They prepared glutinous rice cakes for a celebratory feast, but eventually, the cakes turned into stones, forming seaside rocks that resemble rice cakes. In addition to its unique geological landscapes, the coastline of Shimen Cave is also a fishing spot, frequently visited by locals for fishing or gathering seaweed.
