Tropic of Cancer Marker Introduction
The Tropic of Cancer crosses through Chiayi County and Hualien County in Taiwan. To mark its passage, three obelisks have been erected on the island, located in ShuiSha Township of Chiayi County, and in Ruisui Township and Fengbin Township of Hualien County. The white octopus-shaped Tropic of Cancer monument, located in Wuqiu Village of Ruisui Township, Hualien, is beautifully designed and surrounded by numerous flowers and trees, forming a small park that has become a must-visit spot for tourists. The park features a white sundial-shaped monument, with four traditional Chinese zodiac animals representing the four cardinal directions: the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the Black Tortoise of the North, known as the “Four Symbols.” Each symbol comprises seven stars, representing the celestial changes of the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Additionally, the wooden corridors on both sides of the park contain numerous informational signs related to astronomy, climate, solar terms, and Earth sciences, making the Tropic of Cancer monument park an educational and recreational hub.
