Tai'an Chuhuo Tribal Square Introduction
Zhongxing Village in Tai'an Township is home to several tribes, including Chuhuo and Simaxian. Both Chuhuo and Simaxian tribes have natural underground gas, which the villagers utilize as a free energy source available year-round. They connect the gas to their homes and workshops for cooking bamboo shoots, drying clothes, boiling water, and bathing. The Simaxian tribe has fewer users due to the longer pipeline, while the Chuhuo tribe has over five users due to easier access. The Chuhuo tribe is named for the flames that have been emerging from beneath the ground for years, which has promoted tribal tourism. The county government, along with indigenous council members, sought funding from the central government to renovate the previously makeshift Chuhuo Square and improve the surrounding environment. Chuhuo Square features six fire pits arranged in a layout that incorporates Atayal tribal totems, showcasing indigenous culture. The square’s “Chuhuo” is a site of constant flames, making it the first square in Miaoli County that can emit fire. Each year, many visitors come to Chuhuo during May and June to witness the fireflies. Additionally, it will also be used for religious ceremonies in collaboration with local churches and as part of the tribe’s harvest festival celebrations.
