Tai'an Fire Tribe Square Introduction

Zhongxing Village in Tai'an Township has several tribes, including Chuhuo and Simaxian. Both Chuhuo and Simaxian tribes possess natural underground gas, which the villagers use as a constant source of free energy throughout the year. They channel the gas into their homes or workshops for cooking bamboo shoots, drying clothes, preparing meals, bathing, and boiling water. The Simaxian tribe has fewer users due to the lengthy pipeline, while the Chuhuo tribe has over five users due to easier access to the gas. Chuhuo Tribe is named after the flames that have been erupting from the ground for many years, promoting tribal tourism. The county government, along with indigenous council members, has sought funding from the central government to renovate the previously rudimentary stone-structured Chuhuo Square and improve the surrounding environment. Chuhuo Square features six fire pits designed with Atayal tribal motifs, exuding indigenous charm. The six fire pits continuously emit flames "year-round," making it the first square in Miaoli County that has fire erupting. Every year in May and June, many tourists visit Chuhuo to see the fireflies. Additionally, future plans include holding religious ceremonies in cooperation with local churches and using the space for the tribal harvest festival.
