Feng Tian Old Street Introduction
Feng Tian Old Street is located on Xinzhong Road in Neipu Township, Pingtung County. This old street was once the most prosperous commercial area of Feng Tian Village. Feng Tian Village is an ancient settlement that developed in the mid-18th century. Along Feng Tian Old Street, many Baroque-style Western buildings are orderly standing, gradually forming a long-term settlement lifestyle. It can be said to be one of the few street scenes that appear in the form of a village. To this day, Feng Tian Old Street retains about 70% of its ancient buildings. Besides being planned as a recreational spot with bicycle paths by the Liu Du Hakka Park, it is also enriched with a strong artistic flavor through installation art. Filled with traditional temple courtyards and nostalgic street house styles, Feng Tian Old Street has several old shops built during the Japanese colonial period lining both sides. These buildings blend the features of Taiwan’s red brick, Western Baroque, and Japan’s Showa-era modern artistic architecture, presenting a unique local culture when contrasted with the local twilight market. Stores within Feng Tian Old Street, such as "Pu Xing General Store," "Song Rong Hardware," "Mei Ya Beauty Parlor," "Rong Sheng Wu Clothing Store," and "Neipu Agricultural Association Feng Tian Office," all showcase the Shōwa period’s wash stone architecture style. The currently operating "Kun Xie Sheng General Store," built around 1920 to 1924, features a facade made of red bricks. The parapet and roof adopt a Baroque decorative style, with diverse decorative shapes, particularly the artistic relief patterns which are a significant feature. Built in 1924, "Hong Yun Xiang General Store," features an open-plan layout and Baroque-style facade decoration, with stunning architectural beauty presented through eagle patterns on the gable, a wide parapet, and decorative elements like horizontal bands, keystones, pilasters, and round-arched windows in the European classical style between floors.
