Nanya Rock Introduction
"Nan'ya奇岩" is known as one of the 36 secret wonders of Taiwan, located along Provincial Highway 2 between kilometers 78 to 95. The Northeast Coast National Scenic Area stretches from Nan'ya in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, to Beigangkou in Yilan County, following the coastline next to the mountains. Apart from the sandy beaches in the Yanmiao and Fulong areas, the entire region is characterized by coastal erosion landforms. Due to the alternating layers of soft and hard rock, along with years of erosion from the strong winds and massive waves brought by the northeast monsoon, the coastline presents a unique landscape of bays, capes, and peculiar rock formations. It boasts the richest geological scenery in New Taipei City, especially the uniquely patterned rock formations that resemble paintings. Since the rocks here are mainly sandstone with varying hardness across different layers, the erosion by seawind occurs at different rates and resistances, leading to a variety of uneven and uniquely shaped rock characteristics. Notable formations include Ice Cream Rock, Bamboo Shoot Rock, and the famous Seal Rock, which attract many photographers and tourists at sunrise and sunset, allowing them to witness the rich geological scenery of New Taipei City.
