Church of Qihou Introduction
Cijin, due to its important geographical location as a harbor export, was the earliest area developed by the Han people in Kaohsiung, featuring the oldest streets, temples, and schools in the city. After the Qing Dynasty's conflict with the Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1865, Kaohsiung Harbor was opened for trade. Dr. Jacobus, a missionary from the Scottish Presbyterian Church, came to the area to preach and established the Dagu Church, which is the earliest and also the first Presbyterian church in Taiwan. In 1935, the church was rebuilt in a Romanesque style, with a brownish-yellow pebble exterior that is quaint and elegant, providing a tranquil corner amidst the bustling Cijin market, serving as a common memory for many about Cijin. Due to the ravages of time, the structure of the old church was damaged, and the Cijihou Church, which has been established for over a hundred years, was rebuilt in 2013, retaining the arches and window sills of the old church while adding a Gothic-style spire, becoming a magnificent seven-story building. In response to the influx of tourists to Cijin, the Cijihou Church has also promoted tourism evangelism, offering visits, drinking water, and sanitation facilities, along with diverse activities for people of all ages to participate. Inside the tranquil church, there is a model of the old church for reminiscence, allowing visitors to bathe in a religious atmosphere and enjoy a moment of peace and beauty.
