East Gate Tower Introduction
During the Qing Dynasty, Meinong Township, centered around Yong'an Street, was surrounded by barriers, with only the East Barrier Gate featuring the sole city gate tower. The East Gate Tower is the most well-known landmark in Meinong, with a very unique design. It was originally built in 1755 by the Hakka people, who valued education and hoped for their descendants to excel, resulting in the construction of the inner building at the East Barrier Gate. In 1937, it was rebuilt to imitate the appearance of the Qing Dynasty's dragon-eave phoenix pavilion. Imposing and majestic, the gate tower is inscribed with the four characters "Daqi Wenming," reflecting the rich life of the people of Meinong. The East Gate Tower is located at the end of Yong'an Road, along the main axis that runs through the township, witnessing the history of Meinong's establishment. Below, the Meinong River served as a communal laundry area for women in the past.
