Dongmen Tower Introduction
During the Qing Dynasty, Meino Township, centered around Yong'an Street, was surrounded by a fence, with only the East Gate serving as the sole city gate tower. The East Gate Tower is the most famous landmark in Meino, featuring a unique design. It was originally built in 1755 by Hakka people, who valued education and hoped for their descendants to excel, with the inner building constructed at the East Gate. In 1937, it was reconstructed to mimic the exterior style of the Qing Dynasty's dragon-beam phoenix pavilion, standing tall and majestic. The tower bears the inscription "大啟文明" (Great Enlightenment of Civilization), symbolizing the rich lives of the people of Meino. The East Gate Tower is located at the end of Yong'an Road, along the main axis line that runs through the township, witnessing the history of Meino's establishment, while the Meino River below served as a communal laundry area for women in the past.
