East Gate Tower Introduction
During the Qing Dynasty, Meinong Township, centered around Yong'an Street, was surrounded by barricades, with the only city gate tower located at the East Gate. The East Gate Tower is the most well-known landmark in Meinong, featuring a unique design. It was originally built in 1755 by the Hakka people, who valued education and hoped for their descendants to succeed. The inner building at the East Gate was constructed for this purpose. In 1937, it was rebuilt in the style of the Qing Dynasty's Longyan Fengge, standing tall and majestic, with the words "Da Qi Wen Ming" inscribed on the gate tower, reflecting the rich culture of the people of Meinong. The East Gate Tower is located at the end of Yong'an Road, along the main axis that runs through the township, witnessing the history of Meinong's establishment. Below, the Meinong River served as a public washing area for women in the past.
