Dongmen Tower Introduction
During the Qing Dynasty, Meinong Township, centered around Yong'an Street, was surrounded by wooden gates, with only the East Gate built as a city gate tower. The East Gate Tower is the most well-known landmark in Meinong, featuring a very distinctive design. It was originally built in 1755 by the Hakka people, who valued education and hoped to foster the success of their descendants with the construction of this inner building at the East Gate. In 1937, it was rebuilt to resemble the appearance of a Qing Dynasty Longyan Fengge, standing tall and majestic. The sign above the gate tower reads "Daqi Wenming," reflecting the rich life of the people of Meinong. The East Gate Tower is located at the end of Yong'an Road, along the main axis that traverses the front and back of the township, witnessing the history of the establishment of Meinong Township, while the Meinong River below served as a public laundry area for women in the past.
