Zhenwen Academy (Wenci Temple) Introduction
The Zhenwen Academy, built in 1797, was originally the Wenchang Emperor Shrine. It has been a gathering place for many literati, filled with a rich cultural atmosphere, and is one of the few surviving academies in Yunlin. The plaque preserved from the Jiaqing period is considered a national treasure. Zhenwen Academy is located at the intersection of Xingnong West Road and Wenchang Road, and it was established to honor the Wenchang Zitong Emperor, Wenheng Emperor, Fuyou Emperor, Zhu Yi Emperor, and Lu Yi Emperor, collectively known as the Five Wenchang Emperors. Locals call it the "Wen Shrine." Within the shrine, societies such as the "Zhenwen Society," "Tan Society," and "Yifu Society" were formed for the gathering of poetry enthusiasts. In 1812, the Zhenwen Society, led by Wang Youcheng and others, proposed the establishment of the academy. Local gentlemen, including Liao Chenghe, enthusiastically funded its construction, which was completed in the following year. A plaque from May 1813 (the 17th year of Jiaqing) hangs on the beam, inscribed with the words "Qianqiu Shuzu," making it one of the few remaining academies in Yunlin County.
