Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Taipei Introduction
Nengshang South Road is known as the "Road to Heaven" due to the concentration of religious institutions such as churches, temples, and worship places found along it. From south to north, there are notable sites including the Hwai En Church, Truth Church, Mosque, Sacred Heart Church, Taipei Church, and Methodist Church. Different religions are represented on this same road, each showcasing its unique characteristics, making it worth a visit. The Sacred Heart Church is situated opposite Daan Forest Park, and its bird's-eye view resembles a cross. At night, illuminated by lights, it emits a soft white glow, creating a noble and pure atmosphere that draws people towards God. The church stands approximately 63 feet tall and features a tent-like structure without columns, which alleviates any sense of spatial pressure and allows for unobstructed sightlines, promoting spiritual contemplation. Inside, the clever use of stained glass and natural light bestows a sacred ambiance, as if entering a holy site that can dispel worldly disturbances. Among its treasures are 18 stained glass windows depicting biblical stories, brought from Belgium in 1998, each over a hundred years old. These works are the creations of the renowned French artist Louis Majorelle. At the bottom of each stained glass panel, explanations of the biblical narratives are provided, making it worthwhile to read and appreciate both the knowledge and the beauty of these artistic pieces.
