Zacheon Cultural Park (Suantou Sugar Factory) Introduction

The Shallot Sugar Factory was established in 1906 and was the third largest sugar factory in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. Due to flooding caused by Typhoon Nari in 2001, the factory suffered severe damage to its sugar-making equipment, leading to the cessation of sugar production. It gradually transformed into a recreational industry, becoming a tourist attraction known as "Cane Cultural Park," which integrates Taiwan Sugar's unique Five Fen Train. The park's century-old sugar factory is its biggest feature. Although the machines have stopped operating, a visitor route has been planned, showcasing items like cane boards and molasses. With guided explanations, visitors can clearly understand the sugar-making process. The Shallot Sugar Factory is housed in quaint wooden buildings, where you can also board the Five Fen Train for excursions. The train departs from the station heading towards Taibao and Nanjing, with guides providing commentary on the rural scenery, including the gradually decreasing fields of white sugarcane. The park also features charming old-fashioned architecture, allowing one to feel the progress of life. By the end of 2004, a new attraction, the Ecological Park, was completed in the area, also serving an outdoor educational purpose. The factory offers many unique and authentic ice treats worth trying, such as Shallot Sugar Red Bean Popsicles, Cane Cultural Red Bean Ice, Job's Tears, and Sour Plum Popsicles, providing an unforgettable experience!
