Nanjing Sugar Factory Leisure Plaza Introduction
After World War II, sugar was one of Taiwan's main industries and a significant export product. The climate and soil in the Chiayi area were very suitable for sugarcane cultivation, which is why the Nan-Jing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at that time, was established in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County. Founded by the Toyo Sugar Co., Ltd. in 1908, it had a sugar processing plant capable of squeezing 3,200 tons of sugarcane daily, producing 20,000 tons of high-grade granulated sugar annually. With the booming sugar industry, Shuishang once thrived; unfortunately, after the decline of the sugar industry, its glory faded. With the loss of market competitiveness, the Nan-Jing Sugar Factory actively transformed and is now developing in a diversified direction. In addition to the existing "sugarcane processing" and "pig farming" businesses moving towards mechanized farming and specialized management, it has also developed multiple transformation projects, including the butterfly orchid industry, which has established an excellent reputation internationally. The sugar factory complex features a modern leisure market selling Taiwan Sugar products. The factory produces a variety of delicious and affordable "zhi-zi ice," frequently attracting many visitors, making the market bustling with people. Next to the market, there is a flower exhibition area and a children's recreational area, providing various options for tourists. The sugar factory's leisure plaza also showcases an old steam locomotive, retired tanks, aircraft, and anti-aircraft guns, as well as a barbecue area for public recreation, alongside a childhood tunnel for children's exploration. Located conveniently across from the Nan-Jing Train Station, the Nan-Jing Sugar Factory not only offers tasty frozen treats but also allows visitors to fully appreciate its historical transformation, with shady trees, vintage buildings, and sugarcane trolleys, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
