Nanjing Sugar Factory Leisure Plaza Introduction
After World War II, sugar was one of Taiwan's main industries and a key export product. The climate and soil in the Chiayi area were very suitable for sugarcane cultivation, thus the Nanjing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at that time, was established in the Shueishang Township of Chiayi County. It was founded by the Toyo Sugar Manufacturing Company in the 41st year of the Meiji era and had a sugar processing factory capable of crushing 3,200 tons of sugarcane daily, producing 20,000 tons of high-grade granulated sugar annually. With the prosperous development of the sugar industry, Shueishang once flourished, but unfortunately lost its glory after the decline of the sugar industry. As sugar production lost its market competitiveness, the Nanjing Sugar Factory actively transformed and is now developing in a diversified direction. In addition to its original sugar manufacturing and pig farming businesses, which have adopted mechanized farming and specialized management, it has developed several transformation projects, among which its orchid industry has established an excellent reputation internationally. The sugar factory has planned a modern leisure marketplace that sells Taiwan Sugar products. The various and delicious flavored crushed ice produced by the factory is affordable and often attracts numerous tourists, making the marketplace always bustling. Adjacent to the marketplace, there is also a flower exhibition area and a children's recreational area, providing visitors with diverse options. The leisure square of the sugar factory features displays of old locomotives, retired tanks, aircraft, and antiaircraft guns, along with a barbecue area for public recreation, and a childhood tunnel for children's exploration. Located across from Nanjing Train Station, the conveniently accessible Nanjing Sugar Factory offers not only the opportunity to taste frozen treats but also a chance to experience its historical transformation, with sprawling trees, old buildings, and sugarcane carts, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
