Nanjing Sugar Factory Leisure Square Introduction
After World War II, sugar was one of Taiwan's major industries and a key export product. The climate and soil in the Chiayi area were particularly suitable for growing sugarcane, leading to the establishment of the Nanjing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at the time, located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County. Founded by the Toyo Sugar Refining Co., Ltd. in 1908, it had a sugar production facility capable of crushing 3,200 tons of sugarcane daily and producing 20,000 tons of grade A granulated sugar annually. Accompanied by the booming sugar industry, Shuishang once thrived, but unfortunately, with the decline of the sugar industry, its glory faded. With the loss of market competitiveness in sugar production, the Nanjing Sugar Factory actively transformed itself and is now developing in a diversified direction. In addition to its original "sugar production" and "pig farming" businesses mechanized for cultivation and managed by specialists, it has developed multiple transformation projects, notably in the butterfly orchid industry, which has established an excellent reputation internationally. The factory area has been planned to include a modern leisure marketplace selling Taiwan Sugar products. The factory's production of iced desserts comes in various flavors, is tasty, and is inexpensive, often attracting numerous visitors, making the marketplace bustling with activity. Next to the marketplace, there is also a floral exhibition area and a children's recreational zone, providing diverse choices for visitors. The sugar factory's leisure plaza also showcases old locomotives, retired tanks, aircraft, and anti-aircraft guns, along with a barbecue area for public recreation; there is a childhood tunnel for children to explore. Located directly across from Nanjing Railway Station, the Nanjing Sugar Factory is easily accessible. Besides tasting the frozen treats, visitors can also appreciate its historical transformation, with shady trees, old buildings, and sugarcane trolleys, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
