Shuanglianpi Wildlife Refuge Introduction
Shuanglian Pond is located in the mountainous basin of Huxi Village, Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, near the Fushan Botanical Garden. It is a natural dammed lake composed of two lakes, known locally as the Upper Pond and the Lower Pond; however, the Lower Pond has turned into a marsh, leaving only the Upper Pond with a water source. Within Shuanglian Pond, one can find one-third of Taiwan's aquatic plant species, making it a rich ecological paradise for aquatic plants. Shuanglian Pond is often shrouded in thick mist, and when viewed, it presents a vast expanse of creeping grass, with occasional clusters of bamboo swaying in the wind, accompanied by the sounds of insects and birds, complemented by the croaking of frogs and the reflections on the lake surface, giving Shuanglian Pond a pastoral poetic charm. Such beauty has attracted countless films to shoot on location here. Another unique ecological feature of Shuanglian Pond is a rare natural phenomenon in Taiwan: a plant island roughly the size of a football field that exists between the two lakes, composed of various aquatic plants that move with typhoons, reshuffling the aquatic vegetation and redistributing territories each time. Due to the uniqueness of this floating island, it nurtures various fish, shrimp, dragonflies, and frogs, as well as attracting several migratory and resident birds, making it an ideal habitat for them. Therefore, it's recommended to take a stroll in Shuanglian Pond on weekends and plan a trip to explore nature.
