Shuanglianpi Wildlife Protection Area Introduction
Shuanglian Pond is located in the mountainous basin of Huxi Village, Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, near the Fushan Botanical Garden. It is a natural dammed lake composed of two lakes, known locally as Upper Pond and Lower Pond, although the Lower Pond has become a marsh and only the Upper Pond retains its water source. The area of Shuanglian Pond encompasses one-third of all aquatic plant species in Taiwan, making it a rich paradise for aquatic plants. Shuanglian Pond is often shrouded in thick fog, revealing vast areas of creeping vines, with occasional rows of bamboo swaying in the wind and the sound of insect chirps and bird calls accompanied by the croaking of frogs. The reflections on the lake surface create a pastoral poetic scene, which has attracted numerous films to shoot here. Another unique ecological landscape of Shuanglian Pond is a rare sight in Taiwan; between the two lakes, there is a plant floating island approximately the size of a football field, composed of various aquatic plants. This island moves during typhoons, reshuffling the plants in the water and redistributing territories each time it shifts. The uniqueness of the floating island nurtures various fish, shrimp, dragonflies, frogs, and other insects, attracting many migratory and resident birds, making it an ideal habitat for them. Therefore, on weekends, consider taking a stroll at Shuanglian Pond to plan a nature-oriented intellectual journey.
