Shuanglianpi Wildlife Refuge Introduction
Shuanglian Pond is located in a mountainous basin in Huxi Village, Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, near the Fukuan Botanical Garden. It consists of two natural dammed lakes, commonly referred to by locals as the Upper Pond and the Lower Pond, although the Lower Pond has since turned into a marshy area, leaving only the Upper Pond with water. The area of Shuanglian Pond encompasses one-third of Taiwan's aquatic plant species, making it a rich ecological paradise for aquatic plants. Shuanglian Pond is often shrouded in thick fog, revealing a vast expanse of vines, with a few rows of bamboo swaying in the wind along the lakeside. The sounds of chirping insects and singing birds, accompanied by occasional croaking frogs, along with the reflections on the lake surface, lend a pastoral poetry to Shuanglian Pond. This beautiful scenery has attracted countless filmmakers for location shoots. Another unique ecological phenomenon of Shuanglian Pond is a rare sight in Taiwan—between the two lakes lies a floating island about the size of a football field, composed of various aquatic plants. The island moves during typhoons, reshuffling the plants in the water and redistributing the area each time it shifts. Due to the peculiar floating island, a variety of fish, shrimp, dragonflies, frogs, and other insects thrive here, attracting numerous migratory and resident birds, making it an ideal resting place for them. Therefore, it is advisable to take a stroll at Shuanglian Pond on weekends and plan a nature-centric journey.
