Fugang Old Street Introduction
Fugang Old Street, adjacent to Fugang Train Station, has a development history that is closely linked to the construction of the train station. In 1908, Fugang Train Station, then known as Bogong Station, was established, attracting a steady flow of people to this agricultural town and bringing prosperity. The old street area along Zhongzheng Road, with its geographical advantage, became the earliest developed area of Bogong, bustling with vendors and lively atmosphere. However, as the railway was rerouted, the glorious years came to an end, leaving only exotic Western-style buildings as witnesses to the bustling past. The Lu Family Western-style building located on Zhongzheng Road is the most representative structure of the old street. Spanning across five shop fronts and two stories, the building's exterior exhibits a grand and imposing presence. Its ornate Baroque elements, central dome, Greek pediment, symmetrical Roman columns, and intricate carvings reveal the affluent lifestyle of its owner. Construction of the Lu residence began in 1929 and took two years to complete. After several decades, it remains a striking landmark of the old street. In contrast to the Lu residence, the quaint buildings on Xinyi Street, with their red bricks and arcades, provide a serene and peaceful sense of entering the everyday lives of local families, as time gently rewinds back to the Showa era.
