Fugang Old Street Introduction
Fugang Old Street, located adjacent to Fugang Railway Station, has a development history closely tied to the establishment of the train station. In 1908, when it was still called Borgong Station, Fugang Railway Station attracted a steady flow of people and vibrant scenes to this agricultural town. The old street area along Zhongzheng Road, benefiting from its geographical advantages, became the earliest developed area in Borgong, bustling with vendors and lively scenes. However, as the railway was rerouted, the thriving days came to an end, leaving behind only the exotic-looking Western-style buildings that witness the glory of the past. The Lyu Family Western-style building, situated on Zhongzheng Road, is the most representative structure of the old street. Spanning five shop fronts and featuring a double-story scale, the architectural appearance showcases a magnificent presence. With gorgeous Baroque elements, a central dome, Greek gable, symmetrical Roman columns, and intricate carvings, it reveals the affluent lifestyle of its owner. Construction of the Lyu residence began in 1929 and took two years to complete, remaining a significant landmark of the old street after decades. In contrast, the modest houses on Xinyi Street, with red bricks and arcades, allow visitors to experience the peaceful and simple life of local families, reflecting the slow passage of time back to the Showa era.
