Moon Cave Recreation Area Introduction

Yuedong (Moon Cave) is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, about 1 kilometer south of Shitiping and near Gangkou Village. It is a natural limestone cave and considered a sacred site by the local indigenous people of Gangkou. Inside the cave, there is a pool of water about 5 meters deep, which rises and falls with the phases of the moon, thus it's called "Yuedong," also known as "Moon Well." Legend has it that there are many eels in the lake, with one weighing over 10 kilograms, known as the thousand-year eel. The site is under construction, with an expected opening in mid-April 2021, subject to actual construction progress. According to local Amis legends, the water in the Moon Cave fluctuates with the lunar phases, hence its other name "Moon Well." Located about 1 kilometer south of Shitiping, the observation deck in the park is adorned with many cute fish carvings and is an excellent spot to enjoy the beautiful sea view. "Yuedong" is a naturally formed enclosed cave; spring water flows from the rocks and accumulates into a lake with no inlet or outlet, yet tidal phenomena occur, creating a remarkable sight. Visitors can take a small boat operated by a guide to explore the stalactite landscape while using a flashlight. The guide explains how Yuedong was formed and describes the ecological environment inside the cave. Animals such as the Formosan leaf-nosed bat, the lesser horseshoe bat, and the Formosan microbat inhabit the cave, flitting about under the beams of light like a game of hide-and-seek, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the cave.
