Chiayi Cheng Huang Temple Introduction
The City God Temple, also known as Chenghuangye, is the center of faith for the people of Chiayi City, symbolizing the guardian deity of the locality. The temple has been deeply connected with the community since ancient times, with a flourishing incense offerings. Established in the 54th year of the Kangxi era (1715), it has a history of nearly 300 years. The current structure was rebuilt in the 11th year of the Showa era and completed in the 15th year of Showa (1940). The temple was first founded in 1715, and it was renovated in the 10th year of the Yongzheng era (1732). By the 29th year of the Qianlong era, the temple had become dilapidated and was at risk of collapsing, leading the new county magistrate Zhang Su to undertake repairs. The current City God Temple was rebuilt under the craftsmanship of Wang Jinmu from the Quanzhou Xidi school, featuring splendid architecture and noble layout with distinct characteristics of wood carving art. The octagonal caisson in the worship hall, as well as the bracketing in the main hall and side rooms, were constructed entirely using mortise and tenon joints without the use of nails or metal, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The temple preserves over ten relics from the Qing Dynasty, including the only plaque from the emperor granted to a City God Temple in Taiwan, "Tai Yang Xian You," and other plaques and tablets from various officials and benefactors, making them invaluable treasures. Rebuilt by Wang Jinmu, the temple exhibits traditional architectural features typical of street-style temple configurations, with magnificent regulations, an exquisitely spacious San Chuan Hall, and masterfully decorated worship hall. The main hall is solemn and dignified, presenting an aesthetic order of space. In the worship hall, there are intricate and realistic works of red-glazed pottery by masters Chen Zhuanyou and Lin Tianmu, valued for their artistic significance. The painted guardian deities are crafted by the renowned artist Chen Yufeng, while the deities, ridge decorations, paintings, stone carvings, guardian figures, and wood carvings in the temple are all exquisitely made.
