Xiyu West Terrace Introduction
Xiyu West Fort is a fort built by Liu Mingchuan during the Qing Dynasty. In 1885, the Sino-French War broke out, and French Admiral Courbet led the Far East Fleet to attack Taiwan and Penghu, resulting in the loss of Penghu. After the Sino-French Treaty, Liu Mingchuan planned Taiwan's defense and proposed appointing a general in Penghu while strengthening its defenses. At that time, a fort was built on a high ground between Wai'an and Nei'an in Xiyu, equipped with four new model Armstrong rifled cannons. The following year, another fort, Xiyu East Fort, was constructed on the high ground of Nei'an. Xiyu West Fort is massive, and the construction was extremely challenging, completing in the 15th year of the Guangxu era. Xiyu West Fort features a sunken architectural structure surrounded by inner and outer walls. The walls are made of stacked stones forming a platform, on which the fortifications are arranged in a shape resembling a mountain. There are two arches along the entrance, with the first arch displaying the inscription: “Xiyu West Fort.” This fort is currently the most well-preserved and historically significant century-old fort in Taiwan. For example, in "Don't Say" by King Guo, he sings with a Cantonese accent while walking along the ancient castle stairs next to the agave, matching the lyrics’ sentiment with beautiful imagery. In Elva Hsiao's “Falling in Love,” the female protagonist walks along the ancient stairs of the castle next to the agave, with clouds passing overhead, creating a unique atmosphere of mystery. Wu Sike's “The Most Loved Is You” MTV was also shot at Xiyu West Fort, featuring clowns, dancers, performers, and Wu Sike's captivating voice, which will surely resonate with those born in the 50s and 60s.
