Xiyu Xitai Introduction
Xiyu West Fort is a fortress constructed by Liu Mingchuan during the Qing Dynasty. In 1885, during the Sino-French War, French Admiral Courbet led the Far East Fleet to attack Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, resulting in the loss of Penghu. After the peace negotiations, Liu Mingchuan planned Taiwan's defense, requesting the appointment of a general in Penghu and strengthening its defenses. At that time, a fortress was built on the high ground between the outer and inner Wanjia of Xiyu, equipped with four new Armstrong rifled cannons, and the following year, Xiyu East Fort was added to the inner Wanjia high ground. The scale of Xiyu West Fort is magnificent, and its construction was very challenging, completed in the 15th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign. Xiyu West Fort is a sunken structure surrounded by inner and outer walls, with stone steps forming a platform inside the walls, where the cannons are placed in a zigzag configuration. There are two arches along the entrance path, with the inscription "Xiyu West Fort" on the first arch. This fort is the most well-preserved and historically significant century-old fortress in the entire province. Many people may not have noticed that Xiyu West Fort has been the filming location for music videos by many big stars. For instance, Jay Chou, with his Cantonese accent, sang "Don't Say" while walking up the castle steps next to the agave, matching the somewhat melancholic lyrics and filled with aesthetic beauty. The plant featured in the video, the Silver Wattle, is common in Penghu. Furthermore, the MTV "Really Afraid" was also filmed at Xiyu West Fort; can you find the clues? In Elva Hsiao's "Falling in Love," the main character, wrapped in a big cloak, walks up the castle steps next to the agave while clouds pass overhead, creating an atmosphere of ancient mystery, which is very special. Wu Sike's "The One I Love Most" was also filmed at Xiyu West Fort, featuring clowns, dancers, and musicians along with Wu Sike's touching voice, which surely resonates with those from the 50s and 60s generations.
