Xiyu Xitai Introduction
Xiyu West Fort was built by Liu Mingchuan during the Qing Dynasty. In 1885, the Sino-French War broke out, and French Admiral Courbet led the Far East fleet to attack Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, resulting in the fall of Penghu. After the Sino-French peace negotiations, Liu Mingchuan planned Taiwan's defense and requested the establishment of a general officer in Penghu, reinforcing its defenses. A fort was constructed on high ground between Waian and Neian in Xiyu, equipped with four new Armstrong breech-loading cannons, and the following year, Xiyu East Fort was added on the inner high ground. Xiyu West Fort is massive, and the construction conditions were extremely difficult, completing in the 15th year of the Guangxu era. Xiyu West Fort is a concave structure surrounded by inner and outer ramparts. The walls are stacked with stones to form platforms where cannons are positioned in a roughly mountain-shaped arrangement. There are two archways at the entrance, with the inscription "Xiyu West Fort" above the first arch. This fort is currently the best-preserved and historically significant century-old fort in Taiwan. Many may not have noticed that Xiyu West Fort has been the filming location for music videos by several prominent stars. For instance, Andy Lau, singing "Don't Say" with a Cantonese accent while walking up the castle steps beside the agave plants, captures a poignant sentiment reflected in the lyrics, creating a beautiful ambiance. The silver acacia plants featured in the video can be seen everywhere in Penghu. Additionally, the "Really Scared" MTV was also filmed at Xiyu West Fort. Can you find the clues? In Elva Hsiao's "Love is Love" MV, clouds pass overhead as the female lead in a large cloak walks alongside the agave plants, creating a particularly ancient and mysterious atmosphere. Wu Sike’s "The One I Love the Most" MTV was also shot at Xiyu West Fort, featuring clowns, dancers, and musicians alongside Wu Sike's beautiful voice, which will definitely resonate with those born in the 50s and 60s.
