Checheng Log Pond Introduction

Checheng Log Pond is located in Shuili Township, Nantou County, and is one of the most representative landscapes in the Checheng area, as well as an important witness to Taiwan's forestry history. This pond was originally built for the development of the lumber industry, witnessing the prosperous scene of Checheng during the peak of the timber industry in the 1960s. Historical Use: Checheng Log Pond, also known as the Cypress Pond, was constructed during the flourishing period of the Checheng lumber industry. At that time, large quantities of logs were transported from the mountains to Checheng, where a crane (a large hoist) was used to lift the logs and soak them in the pond. This process allowed the tree resin to be released, reducing the growth of bacteria and fungi, and extending the preservation period of the wood. The soaked wood is also less prone to cracking and deformation, making it easier to process. Crane Features: The cranes used back then were made of Taiwanese cypress and could lift weights of up to 11 to 13 tons, serving as an important symbol of local forestry. Today, after restoration, the crane has become a spiritual landmark of Checheng. Current Appearance: Ecology and Landscape: With the decline of the forestry industry, the log pond has transformed into an ecological pond. A lakeside walking trail has been planned with maple trees, camphor trees, bald cypress, and purple-flowered schinus species planted along the way. Surrounded by mountains, the shimmering lake reflects the changing colors of the bald cypress and the hills, creating a picturesque scene that has been praised as a "hidden gem that feels like being in Japan." Cultural Atmosphere: The Japanese wooden buildings, unique teahouses, and lumber industry exhibition halls next to the log pond create a nostalgic atmosphere that also blends modern cultural creativity and leisure elements. Travel Recommendations: Stroll along the lakeside trail to enjoy the lake's scenery and the seasonal changes in the plantings. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon at the Japanese teahouse and experience the unique slow-paced lifestyle of Checheng. Visit the lumber industry exhibition hall to learn about the history and processing techniques of Taiwan's forestry development. Checheng Log Pond is not only a representation of natural beauty but also a microcosm of Taiwan's forestry culture. Whether for sightseeing, photography, or experiencing the grandeur of the old lumber industry, this is a must-visit attraction in Nantou's Checheng.
