Tie Bookstore (Toufenpu Cultural Studio) Introduction
"Xi. Bookstore" (Toufenpu Cultural Studio) is an independent bookstore located in Pingtung City. Its founders, Hsu Hsiao-Ching and Peng Chiao-Ju, graduated from the Hakka Culture Research Institute at National Kaohsiung Normal University, specializing in ethnic relations, folk beliefs, and food culture research. In addition to social science-related books, the bookstore also features a food research room established in response to their expertise in food culture studies. "Xi. Bookstore" is situated in the Victory Star Village Creative Living Park, which is home to the largest, most numerous, and most complete group of Japanese-style military officer dormitory buildings in Taiwan. In 1927, the 8th Army Aviation Regiment of Japan was stationed in Pingtung and built officer quarters; later, with the arrival of the National Government, officers moved in with their families, integrating a rich cultural flavor of military dependents into the Japanese architecture. In recent years, the Pingtung County Government has actively renovated the military dependents' quarters, gradually forming the current settlement of Victory Star Village. While preserving the characteristic buildings from the Japanese colonial period, it has also invited many local cultural and culinary industries to set up shop, enhancing the vitality of Victory Star Village and providing a home for Pingtung's cultural workers. The "Xi. Bookstore" team was established in 2015, and when they moved into Victory Star Village, the local government faced budget constraints, and only some buildings in the overall park had been renovated, with many military dependents still living in the area. During the initial phase of large-scale renovations in the park, local cultural and historical teams, such as the "Pingtung County Aihsiang Association" and the "Hsieh Cheng-Chi Cultural and Arts Foundation," collaborated to conduct cultural and historical surveys of the military dependents' village. "Xi. Bookstore" utilized the bookstore's advantages of "openness and sharing" to help disseminate valuable cultural and historical materials collected from various surveys and employed their curatorial and editorial skills to help more local residents and visitors understand the historical context of Victory Star Village. In addition to its connections with Pingtung City, "Xi. Bookstore" also has a unique background with Laiyi and Taiwu Township. From 2021 to 2023, they assisted in the editing and printing of the Laiyi Township newsletter and cultural calendar, as well as interviewing and editing the Taiwu Township newsletter. Through these experiences, the team hopes to detail their growth trajectory and aims to share their accumulated experiences over seven years of operation, providing a channel for returnees. Therefore, in 2024, they will establish the "Victory Pingtung Empowerment Station," returning to the historical context of "Pingtung City," striving to connect local cultural workers, studios, and businesses through data collection, historical editing, walk-through activities, lectures, and performances, attempting to cultivate and construct local identity in Pingtung. At the end of the year, they will return to the local temple, Taitung Puhua Shan Wanfugong, drawing inspiration from Pingtung City's past cultural memory of "Guangdong Road Commerce Exhibition" to hold concerts, exhibitions, and youth markets, creating a new Pingtung brand of "Shared Sounds and Goods."
