Mizukubo Theater Introduction

Rice Warehouse Theater, originally named "Taoyuan County Rice Control Association Warehouse," was established in 1936 during the Japanese occupation. At that time, World War II was underway, and the Japanese government's rice policy shifted from increasing production to suppression, controlling the surplus rice circulating in the Japanese market. The "Rice Control Association" was formed to store surplus rice at the production site, and the "Taoyuan County Rice Control Association Warehouse" was born in this historical context. After the war, in 1945, the rice warehouse was managed by the "Taiwan Provincial Food Bureau Hsinchu Office Taoyuan Branch," designated as Warehouse No. 9 and No. 10, with an additional administrative management center of 99 ping. In addition to storing rice, it also served as a burlap sack warehouse, where women were frequently hired to repair burlap sacks in the corridors. To this day, remnants of the former "Food Bureau" and "grain sacks" stamped printing plates can still be found in the warehouse. With the passage of time, the rice warehouse became increasingly unsuitable for modern grain storage needs and was gradually vacated. Thanks to the efforts of local workers, in November 2017, the rice warehouse was officially registered as a historical building. It adopted professional theater equipment in line with its architectural features, planning to become a small to medium-sized theater space. In 2022, it was renamed "Rice Warehouse Theater," transforming into a small theater that carries on the storage function of the warehouse, combining performing arts with the urban atmosphere, and establishing itself as an experimental creative base for small and medium-sized theaters in Taoyuan, empowering local performing arts talent with a new mission. The Rice Warehouse Theater complex consists of three buildings, with the original Blocks B and C converted into the Rice Warehouse Theater operated directly by the Cultural Bureau. Block A is used under an administrative contract by the Taoyuan City Government Agricultural Bureau and Taoyuan District Office, designated respectively as the Taoyuan District Agricultural Association Taoyuan Cultural Warehouse and the Taoyuan District Yongxing Rice Warehouse Civic Activity Center.
