Lu Kang Street Revitalization Base Introduction

Luo Jin Combination: Revitalizing a Century-Old House, Collaborating for Creation in Lugang. "Luo Jin" is an ancient name for Lugang, where "Luo" sounds like "deer" in Taiwanese, and "Jin" means port. The term "Combination" embodies the diversity of space and the spirit of collaboration; it is not limited to a single business but shapes a unique operation model through the cooperation of multiple entities, industries, and roles. This space is also a brand created by the Lugang Nianzi team located on Lugang Street. The building was originally the Shengxing Commercial Firm, one of the dye houses in Lugang's eight suburbs, symbolizing the historical legacy of the space. It was restored in phases in 2022 and 2024 with the cooperation of the Lugang Nianzi Cultural Business and the owner, integrating government resources for soft and hardware subsidies. The century-old house was revitalized and began operating in 2023 alongside Skinny Cafe. This place attracts visitors with the aroma of coffee, offering freshly roasted coffee, cultural performances, and local products, creating a warm atmosphere that blends nostalgia with innovation, allowing more people to experience the beauty of Lugang and showcasing the multi-faceted charm of the old house. Inside, traces of past life can still be seen, including the arched depressions formed on the thresholds from years of passage, two wooden staircases leading to the second floor, the well, the courtyard, and existing partitions, preserving the street house form from the Qing Dynasty. The expansive well and wooden carvings symbolize the wealth of prominent families at that time. The newly designed facade combines the features of wooden windows from two classical old houses in Lugang - Baichuan Hospital and Huang Zuhui's residence - serving as a tribute to the two vanished old houses. Lugang Street (now Zhongshan Road), also known as Wufu Street or "no sky street," is the main commercial street of Lugang, while the He Xing Street where Luo Jin Combination is located is the primary gathering place for dyeing houses and numerous fabric shops. The site consists of two floors; the first floor is the dining space, while the second floor can be flexibly adjusted for cultural experiences, thematic exhibitions, and guided tours. Since its operation, it has utilized team planning and local collaboration advantages to hold interdisciplinary activities periodically, attracting people to experience life in the old house, allowing for the imagination and possibilities beyond residential and commercial use, giving new life to the century-old house standing on Lugang Street. With repairs to the main building gradually completing, the site plans to collaborate with the Changhua County Baolu Movement Association in the future, launching a one-day experience itinerary centered on five themes - architectural space, industrial craftsmanship, cultural memory, local language, and festive celebrations, with local tours, lectures, and experiential activities to encourage participants to actively engage in the preservation and innovation of local culture, sparking interest and passion for local culture and handicrafts. Participants will gain firsthand experience in the restoration of Lugang’s old houses, innovation in traditional crafts, and local curation, inspiring a sense of responsibility and mission towards cultural inheritance and innovation.
