Yiyuan Old House Introduction
Matsus' largest historic residence - Matsu Chen Residence (Yiyuan Old House) is a national historic site and the largest historic house in Changhua. It is also a famous mansion in Taiwan, established in the 26th year of the Daoguang reign (1846 AD). The Chen family became wealthy from trading and purchased the land to build this grand residence and estate. A clan member passed the imperial examination in the 9th year of the Xianfeng reign (1859 AD), and later several members of the family became literati and degree holders, achieving remarkable family prestige.
The Gate of Chen Siyi: The entrance of the ancient residence in Yiyuan has "Chen Siyi" inscribed on the plaque. This gate forms an internal and external plaza space and is a traditional gatehouse structure. The name "Siyi" originated from the fact that the second generation of the Chen family had four male descendants. To ensure prosperity for each branch of the family, they were divided into four houses, hoping that each would thrive, hence the name "Chen Siyi." The plaque at the entrance of the ancient residence still bears "Chen Siyi" as its emblem.
Flagpole Base: In front of the main hall, there is a pair of flagpole bases, established by the clan during the ninth year of Xianfeng (1859 AD).
