Baisha Keng Wende Temple Introduction
Built during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong period, it was named "Bao'an Temple". During the Daoguang period, due to the local Hanlin (scholar) Zeng Weizhen, the temple name was changed to "Wen De Temple", signifying "to protect the land and ensure the safety of the people, as well as to promote cultural and moral teachings". The emperor conferred upon the Land God of Zeng's hometown a title equivalent to that of a Hanlin, and granted him a specially crafted hat, making it the only Land God in Taiwan to receive a bestowed official title. Wen De Temple follows an ancient ritual for the Lantern Festival that has lasted over a century, and was registered as a "Cultural Heritage Asset" in 2008. After four relocations, the temple has expanded significantly and its incense offerings have grown stronger. There are ceremonial gates and pathways on both sides, and "Wu Ying Lou" was later built to honor the military deity generals and display cultural relics, adding to its historical significance.
